5. Which four?

I have over 20. I am running WinME. Some are the dsl programs, some printer stuff (I don't print on a daily basis, however), Norton Systemworks, MemTurbo....

How can you start up with only four?

ISPs out there?

You don't say what OS you have, but there is a program on Windoze 98SE and XP called MSCONFIG. You can use it to shut off unnecessary programs that start on bootup.

If you have Win2K, you can download a freeware version of MSCONFIG.

If you don't know what any one of those programs is, you can use a site like this to find out.

Startup List

Whenever I install new programs, I always use the "Custom" button to direct the program where I want it to go instead of where IT wants to go. Then I also make sure to tell it I DON'T want it to start on boot up (unless it absolutely has to -- printers and scanners, for instance.)

Edit to fix link . . . :silly:

belongs to the town I work for and there are hundreds of links out there that would have to be changed so people can reach me. I do this history thing as a side job for them.

4. I think you have a virus
Which is odd because I see you are running McAfee antivirus too.

Several of those entries on your running programs list are unfamaliar to me so I tried searching for info on them. At least 3 of them return no results whatsoever which almost certainly means the filenames are randomly generated, a common tactic that viruses and spyware proggies use.

That "systral" entry doesn't turn up on known program lists either but a google on it turns up a few hits, all in Chinese, detailing instructions for contructing a type of virus known as a "wooden horse", a takeoff on trojan horses. Apparently this particular bit of code does intall something called systral.exe on your hard drive but that's about all I can figure out, the translation isn't very good.

I would make sure that you update your antivirus definitions on McAfee and run a scan to see if it turns up anything.
