Need help NO Youtube anymore!
I have a 8 yr old Sony pc that we have added extra memory and speed over the years and I still use XP and I can't get Adobe Flash to work anymore. I downloaded the new version 10 and even went into site and printed out how to fix this problem, did step by step every thing they said but it still won't work.

Help!

I am not a techy at all...not stupid but not a techy.

Any help is appreciated. I miss being able to see stuff.

Marla :)

1. Try this...
Go to this website http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

Scroll down and find the link to "Download the Windows Flash Player 10 ActiveX control content debugger (for IE) (EXE, 2.00 MB)"

Download it and then run the installation.

Hopefully this will repair your Youtube video problem.

NOTE: The installation may give an error, ignore it and let it run anyway.

Nice Avatar Marla. Cheers!

2. Try uninstalling and re-installing
they have both utilities to do this at their site.

I assume you are getting other sounds.

3. I just did what the first person said the debugger
and it didn't help. I did uninstall and redo it and also didn't work. I just don't get it...never had any problems until about a month ago.

4. Another shot
Download and run the removal tool located here:
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe

Reboot your computer.

Download, save to your desktop and install Flash Player standalone installer located here:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/win/install_flash_player_10_active_x.exe

Reboot your computer again.

Download, save to your desktop and install Shockwave Player installer here:
http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/shockwave/default/english/win95nt/latest/Shockwave_Installer_Full.exe

Test Youtube, If you still have trouble, try resetting your Internet Explorer security settings to their default:
Select Tools > Options > Security tab > make sure Internet zone is selected > click Default Level button

You can also try a different browser, disable any ad blocking and pop up blockers and test with each change.

6. Same problem, XP and IE - can't solve it either. Use Firefox - works.
I'm using XP and have the very same problem getting flash installed for IE.

Firefox works perfectly - if you don't know what you're doing you should stop using Internet Explorer:

"If users can find an alternative browser (Firefox), then that's good mitigation against the threat."

10. Wow. OK, you've got to learn to explain things with a little more detail.
OK, you're using Firefox, your problem's not with IE, and you DO have Flash installed and working on other websites, and you can see the video on Youtube, and it's just the sound?

The player on Youtube remembers your sound settings. On the bottom of their video player control there's a popup volume slider control. A FEW times I've turned it down and to come back later and I couldn't hear it.

7. Do you have Google Web Accelerator installed?
That's been known to prevent IE from streaming YouTube videos.

11. It seems many Firefox users have the same problem...
A few more options that seemed to fix the problem for some. Try each as a separate fix.

1) In Firefox:
1. Go to tools -> add-ons -> plugins
2. disable flash plugin
3. refresh youtube webpage
4. go back to tools -> add-ons -> plugins and enable flash plugin
5. refresh the youtube webpage and try it

2) Update your Java to the latest version.
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

3) Uninstall Quicktime.

4) Try disabling Java in Firefox. Go to Tools->Options->Content->Uncheck "Enable Java", and then restart Firefox.

5) Downgrade Flash Player to an earlier version.

12. YouTube doesn't use Java
Whatever you do with Java won't affect it.

Quicktime shouldn't affect it either, unless it's configured to be Firefox's default plugin for .swf files.

13. Nonetheless
I've listed fixes that worked for others from various message boards.

RE: Quicktime shouldn't affect it either, unless it's configured to be Firefox's default plugin for .swf files.

Update: In which case it could.

14. They might think noodling with Java fixed it
But YouTube does not invoke Java.

Um... yeah. And?

In the odd instance where Quicktime is set to handle Flash content, re-associate the filetypes to the Flash plugin. Uninstalling Quicktime only leaves files dangling without an app. And it leaves you without Quicktime.

15. Whatever...
You've added nothing to fixing this person's problem.

Just criticism of others trying to help.

Nice job!

16. You're kidding, right?
If I've criticized others, I'd like to see it. Show me.

Of course, when you're looking for excuses to bristle, merely noting something won't work is a serviceable example of adding "nothing," just "criticism." Ignoring the top post in this subthread helps, too. It seems I helped you get what you wanted... no need for thanks.

If you're going to manufacture slights to your honor, post a list of the materials you like to work with, so the rest of us don't get roped into your drama.

17. Seriously?

C'mon.

Oh, I guess I'm just gonna let this out here in this forum, away from the fray. There's been more than a few little dust-ups of this variety even here lately, and that's just bothersome.

First of all, glad you're here, PennDem. You've added some good posts to this forum.

Second, please just don't take any of this personally.

I don't really get it sometimes. One wanders into a semi-anonymous forum, and inexplicably things get all wonky.

My version of a support forum when I started messing with computers involved a few guys and one girl getting together in one of our parents' basement or den or wherever and just hacking around until we figured whatever it was out. And in the middle you heard crap like this:

"Fucking moron. You just spent three hours writing code that does the same damn thing as the sound() command."

"If ya weren't such a slut, you might be able to put the disc in the right way."

"It's HEX, dumbass, which doesn't actually have anything to do with magic."

And we LOVED one another.

Nothing here is as "insulting" as that. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work, and pointing it out is no biggie.

19. I have a theory ...

The success of a collaborative effort is directly proportional to the amount of profanity used. This comes directly from my collaborative efforts with friends trying to beat a computer into submission.

The "COCO Incident," as it is known among my friends, is the prime example.

We were trying to force a TRS-80 COCO II into digitizing music and saving it to a disc. Well, "we" weren't. The machine was mine, and I wasn't there, but a few of my friends were in my house messing with it and came up with this wild scheme because they were bored and tired of playing Ultima on the Apple machine. I walked in at some point and asked what they were doing. Then I looked at what my friend was doing in the assembler, after which came the comment about his having spent three hours doing something for which there was already a command.

Much profanity and insults to integrity and questions about parentage followed. Half an hour later we had a little system that could "read" a cassette tape with music on it and save at least part of the song to a floppy ... part because it was a 160KB disc, and we had no ideas about efficient compression.

Good times ... :)
