Quick question - How do I use administrative tools on my PC
To reset my computer so that it will operate the way it did ten days ago, and not the way some new MS dealie now wants it to act? (MS now uplods its latest fixes on my machine whether I want them or not.)

Or if it doesn't involve Administrative tools, please let me know, also.

1. Automatic updates ...

Sounds like something switched automatic updates on. This is in the Security Center, IIRC, and can be turned off with a simple radio button click.

Or are you saying auto update is off and you're still getting these things?

2. i think what i have heard is that MS now overrides the turning off of the Automatic Updatess
So in any case, you are stuck getting them. But i will try what you suggest and see if that helps.

But my original query was about going into Administrative tools and resetting my computer to act the way it did ten days or so ago.

Someone here on this forum explained how to do it about 18 mos ago, and I made a little text file recording what they said. Now I cnnot remember what I titled that text file so I am here hoping someone can help.

3. Couple of things to do
First, go to programs, accessories, system tools. There you will find system restore, which is pretty self explanatory when you find it.
Click on Restore my Computer to an Earlier Time, up comes a calendar with the restore points marked in bold text.

If you don't have System Restore turned on you may be in trouble. To turn it on or off, RIGHT click on the My Computer desktop icon and select Properties. Wade through the tabs there and you will find out whether it is turned on or not.

While you are in My Computer properties you could always turn off Automatic Updates. You will find it in another tab.

I know it's not for everyone, but I absolutely, definitely, irrevocably never let anything update on my computer without me first deciding to do it. Not even Windows, not even the fucking time!

6. That is exactly what I was trying to find out about.
my problem was fairly big though - one of my emails had slowed down to a crawl and would not let me send email out.

I purchased Spy Doctor and got rid of some nasties and everything is working much better. (Though the Husband and I both thought that our AVG should have kept the nasties out to begin with! But it didn't)

But most of the time, what I need to do is what you just decribed.

8. MS overides turning off of Automatic updates
is not true. If you wish to have your PC to be vulnerable to every hacker out there it is still your prerogative.

11. Headline problem ...

You may know this already.

There was news story that went out not long ago that had something like that a headline, and it was picked up in several place. If one read the details, what is actually happening, eventually, is that users using the update system for XP won't be able to bypass the SP1 and SP2 updates in favor of downloading individual updates.

IIRC ...

4. One of my favorite administrative tools is...
The SawzAll. Wear good, electrically-insulated rubber gloves and leave the computer plugged in and the light show is far out, maaaaan. ;-)
