As my computer ages things begin to fail

it's only a couple of years old, but I need a new motherboard. I broke the little latches that hold in the ram on the 3rd dimm slot. And as if that is not enough, I put in a second hard drive and installed windows xp (with sp3). Everything but the modem works. It's a softvoice v92 and the computer won't even sense it. It works on the other hard drive, but not on the new one. The conexant chipset is software based. I have no idea what that means. Is us robotics better becouse it is hardware based? Oh well, at least diablo II runs just fine....

1. If those are the only problems you're having

you may not need a new motherboard just yet. If you are not planning on changing your memory configuration, I'd try a spot of super glue at each end of the memory chip with it already inserted in the slot with the broken latches. Make sure not to get any on the contacts.

What is the make/model of your PC? If it is a no name system, do you know the make/model of the motherboard? Did you get a driver disk with the computer/motherboard? If so, explore the disk as it may have the drivers for the modem.

2. You don't need any glue on the memory latches.

The idea behind them is mainly when you remove the memory stick for what ever reason.

4. On an already damaged motherboard

the glue will not hurt. The memory chips can work themselves out over time if they are not secured in place. The clips keep them from backing out as well as assist in their removal.
