I've got a laptop wireless connection problem that is driving me CRAZY (yes, I screamed)
I'm sitting surfing and/or downloading a video and suddenly it loses contact. A little yellow exclamation point appears over my wireless icon but when I go to look at the network lists it says "connected" but with limited connectivity (or something like that). I can disconnect and reconnect and even though the exclamation point goes away I can't connect to the Internet again until I either completely shut down or close the lid and go to sleep. After that it works again (for awhile).

It does this on any wireless connection i am on anywhere.

It started when Netgear was trying to guide me through my wireless print server and we were changing every setting you could imagine. I know it is something we did then (or strongly suspect) but Netgear says they are not responsible and will only fix it for a support fee.

Any ideas what is wrong or software that will troubleshoot this?

Any help would be a true godsend as this is a major pain in the ass.

1. What OS?
And, what kind of network card/adapter? Have you reinstalled the drivers for the network card?

3. If you are on Windows..turn off the Wireless Zero Configuration service and use
another tool to configure/control your wireless card.

Also, from your post below, HP should have driver downloads available online. Have you checked?

9. Hi Duane,

What kind of wireless adapter do you have? To find out-

Right click on "My Network Places" and select "Properties"
When the Network Connections list comes up-
Right click on "Wireless Network Connection" and select "Properties"
At the top of this dialog will be a box that says "Connect Using"
In that box will be the name / brand / model number of your wireless adapter.
Go go Google and search for "software and drivers" for your adapter.
Install this.
This is the software you want controlling your wireless adapter, not the Windows Wireless Zero.

So, now you need to turn off Windows Wireless Zero

Hit Start, in the Run box type "services.msc" (no quotes) and hit Enter.

This will launch the Windows Services configuration center.

Scroll down the list to "Wireless Zero Configuration"
Right click on that entry and select "Stop".
Right click again and select "Properties".
Change the Startup Type from "Automatic" to "Disabled"

This will stop windows from controlling your wireless adapter.

4. Seen this happen before
and it was incorrect security settings. Make sure that your adapter security settings match your router security setup. If using WEP security, the encryption level (64 or 128 bit) must be the same at both ends. If using WPA, is it WPA-PSK (TKIP) or WPA2-PSK (AES)? They must match.

The earlier replies give good advice. Update or reload your adapter drivers. The winsock fix is definitely worth trying. The manufacturer of your computer or wireless adapter may provide an alternate configuration utility for wireless connectivity rather than using the Windows utility. Try it.

6. I don't have the driver as it was built in wirless. Should I go to
HP and ask for a downloaded configuration tool? I hate calling them because it is a maze of voice activated phone menus.

8. What is the model number of your laptop?
Also, look for the wireless adapter in Windows device manager and get the make and model number of it. That info will make it easier to find a driver from the adapter manufacturer rather than HP.

Turn the notebook up-side-down to read the information on the service tag.

Example Model Number (below the bar codes) dv9095xx

Go the HP Software & Driver Downloads page.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/static_software_select?swlinkmsg=100&lc=en&dlc=&cc=us&docname=c00033108&product=18703
Select your country language option.
Select Download drivers and software.
Type in your model number and click the start search icon.
Select the appropriate operating system for a list of drivers.
Select the desired driver.
