Mouse going crazy
My mouse has lost its mind.

The cursor moves in a very jerky fashion, often jumping about after I stop moving the mouse and if I even touch the scroll wheel the page automatically scrolls to the bottom.

I'm running XP and have a rather old Logitech cordless mouse.

It happens in both Firefox and IE and when not on line such as when I'm trying to run a program.

I've tried rebooting to no avail.

Like I said the mouse is old so it may be crapping out, but I'd be much appreciative if any of you all could shed some light on this mystery. Thank you a head of time.

1. Have you cleaned the mouse?
Removed the ball and clean all the gunk on the wheels inside.

2. Yeah, I tried that.
I think it's just on its last legs. I went out and bought a cheap mouse and installed that and it seems to be working fine. The other one is five, six years old so I'm about due for a new one anyway.

Thanks for the help.

3. Are you still using the ball?
I've been using digital for um probably about seven years. Love It! I'll never go back to the ball.
Also have to replace mine. Sometimes I practically have to sit on it to get it to click.
If I knew more about them, I would like a wireless. I read scary stuff about replacing the batteries all the time, and they require a much higher initial investment.

5. Nah, it was wireless optical.
With the wireless you will go through batteries but if you get rechargeable batteries it's not that big a deal. Get two sets of batteries, one set sits in the charger while the other set is in the mouse.

7. Is it USB?
Does it have an installation disk? Driver? You might want to remove it (uninstall via Device Manager) and then reinstall. If you don't have a disk, Windows will install it after reboot.

8. Yeah, I tried that too.
Thanks though.

Given that the new mouse is working fine and that the old one was five, six years old at least, I'm going with the "the old one is old and broken" theory.

4. Believe it or not I once had a trojan or virus that affected the mouse.
It was way back on Windows 98. It went crazy, all over the screen. There is much better security now, but your post reminded me of that. My tech finally discovered the reason.

6. I thought of that, but I didn't pick anything up on a virus scan.
Just an old mouse, giving up the ghost.
