Hello -- can anyone tell me why I keep having a problem with YouTube videos?

They keep telling me I have Java script off or need to update Adobe Flash Player --

at this point I'm up to #13 or #16 of adobe!!!

And still no video --

My son fixed this for me the last time, but I have no idea what he did.

Any ideas?

I see other people from time to time commenting that they've had this problem???

1. This is really embarrassing to admit

but something similar happened to me not long after I began using a script blocker. When YouTube can't run its script it assumes there's something wrong with your Flash plugin. (Now they included Java in the warning.) Well, after reinstalling the plugin a couple of times, it finally dawned on me that it might be NoScript and sure enough it was. Like I said it was shortly after installing NoScript and I was still getting used to fiddling with it.

I doubt that's your problem but you might want to check into anythjing that could be preventing the script from running.

2. The only Java program I seem to have looks like something to do with drawing .. . but ...

bear in mind, whatever programs I have now I haven't changed --

this just happens periodically.

I can watch the video if someone else puts it up --

Somehow I keep suspecting my Norton/Systematic .... don't know if that's possible tho?

PS: What else would include a "script" program?

3. I found something in the Youtube forums

I have always been able to watch all youtube videos, but it seems like

Then I started getting that same message instead of the video.
Now here is the kicker- Sometimes, I can watch the videos, sometimes I
cant it seems random.

I have found out that If I go to ANY user channel, I can watch their
'feature video' just fine. If I click on any video in their channel- I
may get that flash player error message or I may not, but generally I
get the error message.

5. That's pretty much it .... with the exception that at some point the situation goes totally away....

for a very long time.

And then, suddenly, I have the problem again???

Meanwhile, nothing has changed on my computer that I'm aware of -- !!???

4. This sounds like JavaScript ...

Note that "Java" and JavaScript are two different things. JavaScript is dealt with by your browser. Java applications are dealt with by the Java runtime environmet (JRE) that you may or may not have installed separately.

Now, to the issue ...

You say that if someone else puts up a YouTube video, you can see it. I'm inferring here, then, that the problem only takes place when you go to YouTube itself but not when you're viewing a YouTube video in, for example, DU's Political Videos forum.

If that is the case, I suspect that something is blocking javascript from ytimg.com.

If you go to YouTube itself, javascript has to be allowed both from youtube.com and ytimg.com in order to see videos.

When a video is embedded at DU (and other places, depending on their specific setup) you only need javascript allowed for youtube.com itself.

And, yes, this could be Norton. You might try poking around in it to see if it is block javascript from any particular places.

What browser are you using (Internet Explorer, Firefox?). If Firefox, is a NoScript extension installed?

I switched to Google Chrome a while back -- months ago -- and YouTube generally played all that
time.

I think one time when I was trying to fix this I simply went to system RESTORE, which is a
possibility.

But I've had Norton on this computer for five yeas -- and only for two or three brief periods
has this happened. In other words, nothing has really changed on my computer where this didn't
continue to work suddenly.

I am getting rid of Norton/Symantec -- I actually got a refund from them -- $50 --
had renewed in February. But they have constant annoying updates ever day though I had always
previously had it set for automatic updates once a week?

That began before I renewed. Hadn't been that way before.
In fact, still now when I go into Norton/Symantec it will keep telling me that my virus
"definitions" are out of date. No matter how many times I update, the message never changes!!!

but I haven't actually removed Norton/Symantec from the computer yet.
The Norton/Symantec guy I spoke with told me it will work til I remove it.

I'm probably going to put AVAST on.

I'm kind of reluctant to do these things cause sometimes it screws up other things and it's
frustrating and takes me a long time to straighten them out. Thought I'd wait when my son was
around to move AVAST in.

I also use the free Malwarebytes anti-virus
and Google Chrome -- both free versions.

Maybe my best bet is to do RESTORE?
