Goofed. Machine restore rather than system.

I had a virus. So I went and did the total machine restore. Rather than just a windows program restore.
Now I can't get word to reload.
I have the office prof. 2003 edition on disc. I put in the disk, but it won't reinstall.
Before I did the machine restore, I did a complete backup to C:
Firefox, etc I got off the internet.
Any ideas? Does word expire after a period of time?

1. You are not using comon terms or else I don't understand. What do you mean by

machine restore? Also are you talking about another HD with a backup on it. Does your cd/dvd read your office disc or it scratched.

2. No..Word does not expire. What do you mean by "it won't install"?

Does your cd/dvd see the disk?...does it do anything.
Do you have all the drivers for the system? (controllers)

3. You did a restore from the original Windows disk?

I assume that's what you did. it's Possible you are missing drivers for your system. Right click on my computer, properties and then click the device manager tab to see if there are any question marks or caution signs visible. Also check to see if you have your CD rom installed there. I'll be on most of the night.

4. Yeah, terms. Ok, I got Word in, I think. But I still have other issues

and things not set up.
As I understand it there are 2 types or places to do restore. The easy one is to go to start, then control panel and system restore, and restore to a point a week or two ago. Easy, and little is lost. I did that on my friends computer last week when he had a virus.
However Sunday, I got one, and without thinking I shut the machine off, and tapped F11 when it started. And did a complete restore. However, first it did make a back up to C:
Either way, downloading Picassa gets all photos back, it scans for them and puts them all back, no matter what.
That's easy, but not necessary if I had done the easy restore.
The computer is still running slow. I replaced spyware doctor with Avast. SD was to renew in 15 days.
Let me try Avast. But it said free trial for 60 days, then I have to pay for it? Ok.
I guess my next issue might be a path. I have always had a difficult time creating a path.
But the only path I need into C: is for Word files, and I probably don't need those.
Oh, I got Firefox and ABP in and got rid of Norton and McAfee and reinstalled the printer.
Why won't passwords stay in?

5. What happens, when you press various keys on start-up, probably depends on

what machine you have. For some Dell machines, for example, CTRL + F11 is supposed to restore the machine to the original state when shipped from the factory -- but you're not indicating CTRL + F11. There may well be someone in this forum who can help, but I'd guess more info is needed: machine? bios? &c

6. Not enough info, I think he did a partition restore

from the hidden partition, and it backed up his files, including the virus. One of the reason I do threads ABOUT software ON HERE. I'll link to my software threads for him in a minute.

Dainie, I am thinking I backed up the virus onto C: also. Did the restore the wrong way all the way around.
But I don't really need to access anything on C: but also I could have avast scan C: and find it and remove it? Couldn't I? I hope? Maybe? But I don't really need it.

10. What I mean is: people may not be able to figure out what you actually did unless you say

who manufactured your machine and what model it is and what bios it uses and exactly what operating system you have

And did you boot from the hard-drive or from a recovery disk or from an install disk or what?

"tapping F11" doesn't tell anybody very much

Is it possible you restored the system to a version of the operating system that is much older than the version of Word you are trying to install? If so, you may need to reinstall some operating system updates

If DB's tools don't help with your recovery, and if you really don't need anything on drive C, you might simply want to reinstall the operating system

9. Thanks again for the help. I should feel funny or something,

having used computers for more than 20 years and I still know next to nothing about them. But I have a friend, who is my age and has used computers for almost as long, 18 years or so, and has bought in that 18 years at least 18, if not 36 computers, for wife, kids, friends, business, etc. And still knows far less than me. Last month he couldn't open his email. ??
So I only have to feel half retarded.
