Microsoft Update KB973688 (XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2)

I have a notice to update my computer with Microsoft KB973688 (XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2).

But I have Service Pack 3, why is it telling me this update is for Service Pack 2? Do I need this?

1. MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2) is different than WinXP OS (sp2).
xml is very important and this closes security loopholes.

2. Can you explain
why 'xml' is very important? I removed all of them. Could that be causing some issues?

3. xml has become the standard. Replaced html in most applications. Replaced rich
text in Office applications. Under the hood everything is xml and you are beening foolish trying to get by without it.

4. Apparently, it must be important

I didn't update the computer with it yesterday, but this morning it is updating itself as I write this. I just thought it odd that I have SP3, and this update was for SP2.

5. The Service Pack updates are for different pieces of software
You have Windows XP Service Pack 3. This update is for the XML Core Services Service Pack 2.

Different pieces of software can have their own service packs. I create software and occasionally release SPs for the applications I've written. But it doesn't mean if I release service pack 2 for one of my application, that that has anything to do with a Windows Service Pack. It's simply an update to the application.

7. I just tried the updates(custom). What a pain in the neck.
Unless you understand all the computer language, you(meaning me) don't know what to avoid. I had updated all except W/8.

2 updates did not install.(KB951847)x86 and (KB974417).

Also, I was switched to Outlook. I could find no way to switch back to Outlook Express.
Maybe foolish but I did System Restore to yesterday and will figure out this later. I don't really know if the updates are still on the machine or not. Shows green check in "update history"

I swear my next computer will be a Mac. I can't keep out of trouble.

8. Did you see the date of the OP. Yesterday was the second Tu of the month and Microsoft does its
monthly updates. Custom updating is not for the novice. I would set the automatic updating on or turn it off and do manually updating using express.

9. So I did that. WTF, Blanche?
Seriously- WTF?

(This has been going on since this installation of XP Pro 64-bit was brand new. I don't know what the problem is, but some updates simply fail to download properly.)

11. Not screaming at you. Just pulling my hair out.
Windows update has been giving me gas lately. I try downloading updates and they fail about seventy percent of the time. I don't think it's anything anyone here can help me with, though. It's just.... just...... weird.

I love the way Microsoft tells you to try to fix the problems, though. Manually stopping a bunch of services related to cryptography was educational, to be sure, but still didn't let me install one update in particular (something related to .NET 3.0, I believe).

It's pointless to try contacting Microsoft for my OS at this point. XP Pro 64-bit was a mistake. I've lost count of the number of headaches their (nonexistent) 64-bit support has caused.

I'll just live with it until I get 7. That, at least, was far friendlier than this pile, even when using the release candidate.

12. 2 things come to mind at this point, check your update history to see if updates have

already been installed and did you run disk cleanup, ccleaner, malwareBytes, and a virus scan.

Second choice
I would run a WinXp repair or a new reinstall after saving your data files. For repair you need the CD OS.

13. To be honest, it's not *really* an issue right now.

I'd just like to know what's going on and why Windows Update, of all things, is failing. Remember, Windows Update has been acting up for me from the time I installed the OS. It downloads the updates, and then says "failed!" Failed what?

There were disc read errors during installation, probably related to my drive and not the disc (no dust/scratches/etc). I'm almost certain that corrupted something during the initial install.

Like I said, I'm getting 7 soon- maybe even later tonight- and I already know 7 is stable and updates properly on this hardware. It's just a weird set of issues.

I'm not afraid of reinstalling the OS, though. I've done that so many times I could do it half asleep (and have, actually). It's just a PITA to have to reinstall all my software. Since I'm authoring a DVD in Ubuntu right now, I'll have to wait. I was just curious as to why Windows Update, of all things, would fail so miserably.

14. Well try this
http://wuauclt.info/scripts.asp

The last script is probably your best bet. When i have issues windows updates, and i update about 1000 systems a month i start in the windows update log file. But if you want to try a shot in the dark try the script.

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 /u wuaueng.dll /s
del /f /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\*.*
del /f /s /q %windir%\windowsupdate.log
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll /s
net start bits
net start wuauserv
wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow
