A little help please
Hello DU. Last night I was surfing the net when a IE window popped up. It said that some program was trying to access my pc. It asked if I wanted to allow once, allow always, block once, block always.
Since I didn't know what the program was, I "blocked always". I was able to continue surfing and had no problems.
My girlfriend just called me and told me that the internet was not working.
She too had "blocked always" this window. She thinks that this action is causing the internet not to work on our PC.
We have a laptop that is able to get the internet. But the PC is not working.
Anyone have a suggestion?

2. Are you using Windows Firewall?
It's always a good idea to write down anything new that wants access, even if it is just an IP address.
If you're using Windows Firewall, go to Control Panel > Security > Windows Firewall > Advanced tab > Reset to Default Settings. If you get the request again, write it down and know what you are blocking.

If not Windows Firewall, which one?

5. What kind of connection is it?
Edited on Sat Dec-12-09 02:39 PM by Why Syzygy
Is there an error message? Have you rebooted the machine? Is it wired, wireless, dial up, cable, DSL? Who is your ISP?

Are you using IE? And I guess you are using Vista?

7. .
Is there an error message? Have you rebooted the machine?
Have you tried "Repair Connection"?

This needs step by step troubleshooting. So every question is important.

9. There is no error message - just the "failed to connect to the internet"
statement.
I have rebooted the pc and the modem. The modem is not the problem as I am able to use the internet with the laptop.
I have tried "repair connection". It says that there is no problem with the internet connection..

11. So, the
repair option indicates that it gives you an IP address and there is no problem with the connection?

So that means when you launch your browser, something else is happening? What is that?

Do this. I'm not sure the exact look of Vista, but there is something close to Start > Run > type "command". Alternatively, there may be a menu item under Start to open a DOS prompt. At the DOS C:\ prompt, type Ping^www.yahoo.com (with ^ being a space). Enter. See what it reports.

15. Glad to hear that.
The ping test showed that you HAD a connection to the internet (all packets received). So there was something other than a connectivity issue blocking the browser. Good you figured it out.
