"Windows Security" notice -- with Shield . . . is this legit or not?

How can something pop up using the Windows Security Shield notice . . .

How can you tell the real thing vs a fake?

How can this go on?

I obviously have something interferring with searches --

Windows Security Shield notice popped up telling me it was a bunch of stuff and

wanted to remove --

If you hit "remove all" ... my Avira anti-virus pops up blocking it saying it is a virus???

Evidently Mysoftprot.com???

Can't do a search without interference -- unless you're very presistent!

Doesn't the actual Windows Security program object to having someone imitating them?

4. The 2nd tuesday of every month MS sends out its monthly fixes. Depending on your setting in

control panel->automatic updates you will see the small shield notifying you that updates are ready. Make sure they are from Microsoft before you install.

7. No . . . I mean in 10 years or more of having computers with "Windows" on them . . .

I've never seen a monthly report!

This is my third or fourth computer -- it was new --

The other ones were used -- from office replacement stuff --


And the pop up notice that I was talking about said "Windows Security" . . . and was

using the shield that my computer uses for security.

When I tried to go with the notice and "Remove" . . . Avira stopped it -- and

no way to get thru it.

Later I removed Avira and haven't seen that pop up again --

8. there is a Fraudulent malware that is really common, it says you need to run a scan and,

download their software.. it looks ligament, but it is designed to totally freak you out.. it takes you to their site to sell it to you, if you aren't really quick it will totally take over your computer. if you try to Google a repair you will only get infinite pages of links to their site..

i shut it down, turned the PSU off, pulled the cable off.. and went to my wifes computer and put a download of Cnet's MaleareBytes on a CD, brought my BIOS up, changed the Boot to the CD, some older only boot on floppy's, started the computer... it downloaded and ran before booting, i got rid of it.

My point, however, was to address the OP's statement: "I've never seen a monthly notice from Microsoft", which indicates that he/she has Updates turned off and is surely missing CRITICAL patches/fixes etc, thereby putting the machine in a state of INCREASED risk of infection and reduced effectiveness, NOT to blame it (Malware) entirely on the missing patches

14. I turn OFF automatic updates on my computers

All I have is XP and SP3 installed on 2 machines. 2 more have XP X64. The other 3 run various flavors of Linux and my laptop has 7 on it-primarily because of driver issues with other OS's.
None of my Windoze machines have been infected for at least five years-and that one was from an infected CD someone gave me.

Most infections are caused by the Human 1.0 Interface cl8icking on something they shouldn't.

15. Mine is set to check with me before downloading & installing.

I then choose custom rather than express at MS Update, choose what I want & ignore the ones I don't want or NEED.

ETA: I run XP SP3, IE 8 on my 5 year old Dell laptop.

I've found two fixes for this ROGUE Program, BOTH of which require using MalwareBytes Anti Malware (which I and MANY others have been telling you for nearly 2 months...Just sayin'...)

I suspect, however, that the Windows Security SUITE ROGUE PROGRAM (which is the ***REAL*** PAIN IN THE ASS HERE, NOT AVIRA OR AVG OR ANY OTHER AUTHENTIC Anti-Virus programs you've used)
is BLOCKING the AUTHENTIC Malware removal programs from running.

There are workarounds for this

My first response to your first topic on this problem (in early December http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=242x28700#28910) contained instructions to post your problem on a Malware removal Forum, where you would receive INDIVIDUALIZED FREE EXPERT ADVICE to aid in removing this thing. You chose to ignore them, instead choosing the SHOTGUN approach you are using here. I PM'd you and asked you to provide PRECISE DETAILS...You chose to ignore that too, instead you chose to provide VAGUE (at best) descriptions here. Just sayin', I'm not trying to be snarky--these are the FACTS.

www.bleepingcomputer.com and www.computerhelp.com are excellent sites to get help ridding yourself of malware. I have been reading your threads as well but you aren't taking suggestions very well. Check out either or both of those sites and they can help get rid of whatever ails your computer.

Bleeping computer is a very interesting sight ---

but -- again -- I could learn to take my car apart and put it back togeether again

in the time all of this takes.

PLUS, not all of the advice is readily understandable to me -- takes a lot of time
