No video signal from computer
Edited on Sat Feb-06-10 01:39 PM by SHRED

My friend's computer does not communicate with the monitor.
It is connected to the onboard video of an Intel D856GLC mobo.

I tested another monitor/cable to make sure it wasn't that.

My thought was to get a "cheap" EVGA FX5200 AGP card as a possible fix ($29).

The mobo says 1.5V-0.8V ONLY.
Is this card going to match?

Is that a decent "fix" for this problem?

thanks

1. The video card should not be a problem if the monitor actual works on another machine.

These cards generate a lot of heat and you may need to get an additional fan also. Leave an extra pci slot empty next to vid card for heat exhaust if possible. Make sure the PC is dust free and good air circulation around the PC box.

Current video drivers should be uninstalled. Navida drivers installed and possible DirectX should be made current for your op system.

This vid card is pre Vista or Win 7 and probably will not support them.

Edit: Clone your HD or get a cheap HD that you may have to do an OS XP repair or a reinstall if the op sys doesn't have a temp driver for the vid card so that you have some video even if its 640 until you get a chance to update the drivers, etc.

2. My personal opinion is that the Motherboard is dying a slow death.
I believe it's a Video Controller problem. I suspect a Video card will not even be "Seen"

Hope I'm wrong.

3. Here is where I am at now

I just noticed the PSU was bad (DOH!) so I replaced it.
The problem remained...even with nothing hooked up.
I got a videocard as a first choice, but didn't unwrap it so I will return it.

It's time for my buddy to upgrade so I am going this route:

New motherboard, CPU, and RAM for about $170:

Mobo/CPU combo deal:

RAM:
