1. As my machine keeps getting older, I've gone from ubuntu to
xubuntu to lubuntu. Progressively lighter versions. I'm quite happy with it and I'm an old man without a lot of computer skills. No defrag, no antivirus, no registry to clean. You have to be a bit flexible and open minded. it isn't windows, it's Linux. You have to learn a few new tricks but there's lots of help available. It's been about 4 years now and I don't do windows at all.

Take your machine's specs to the site and see if it works for other people. good luck.

2. If it runs 7 it will run any version of Ubuntu.
32 bit will run with no problem, 64 bit will work just fine too.

I use an Ubuntu live 32-bit disk to save data from crashed Windows systems all the time.

6. One more thing
If you were using Firefox on Windows, you can easily import your entire browser profile (bookmarks, history, extensions, themes, passwords, cookies, etc.) with the https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2109/">FEBE Firefox extension.

9. Thank you
I've been using Linux for a couple of years now and only wished I would have switched earlier. I just kept putting it off because I must use Windows at work and just didn't want to learn yet another OS. But, as you're no doubt finding out, it's really not that different. Desktop, icons, mouse, point & click. It's like Windows but without all the crap (viruses, malware, defragging, dealing with antivirus programs). It's just easier in the long run, even if I do have to keep a foot in the Windows world because of work.
