What did I do? Yesterday I was fishing around this infernal machine

trying to do a little housecleaning. Somewhere along the way I did something and now the few sites where I am permanently signed in (like DU) are now requiring my user name and password at every attempt. I am wondering if I checked or unchecked something. I have checked the 'keep me signed in' but it is not accepting it. If I leave the site, I have to sign in again.I don't even know where to look. Any ideas?

1. check your cookies settings in your browser.

Ifthey're set for current session only, you will have to log on every time.

2. Did you clean up with CCleaner?

I bet you deleted your cookies which are little bits of code that tell a website who you are and what your password is.

If so, it's too late to fix now, you will need to log into sites again.

In future, go to the Applications tab in CCleaner and untick Mozilla (or whatever browser you are using) and your cookies will be left intact.

3. If you do use CCleaner here's a good tutorial

Going to Options >> Cookies you can selectively choose which cookies to keep & which to delete. A bit tedious at first but after a while you build a library of "good" cookies which are stored permanently (unless you accidentally delete them).

4. Thank you, this is where I made my mistake, I'm sure.

A quick review of this tutorial seems clear. Tomorrow I will go through it thoroughly and try and get myself back to where I was.
You are all so helpful.

I did try the 'Google' to find the answer to my problem but was unsuccessful.

All this mess was caused because I was trying to do some housekeeping. My old machine is getting a little tired, I think. I use Firefox and like it a lot but I think there is a ton of junk somewhere on this machine that is slowing it down. I have a tendency to try things when I shouldn't.

5. That shouldn't happen with CCleaner

Even after you've cleaned your machine with CCleaner, when you, again, tick a "keep me signed in" box on a site during your login, you should be able to return without having to log in every time.
