Where/How to download Outlook Express
I was trying to de-junk my hard drives and seem to have entirely deleted all my stash of e-mails and address book.

I'm assuming there's no way to retrieve such a deleted program, so where do I go to download Outlook Express and start over???

Found a tutorial on YouTube but the suggested site for download gives me the Site Not Found box.

Is it safe to just pick a website from the list Google gives for "download Outlook Express?"

I got a nasty virus from Google images once and am truly Google-shy.

1. The cnet.com downloads are reliable
Edited on Mon Oct-03-11 07:28 PM by JBoy
You don't mention the operating system you're using - XP / Vista / Windows 7? I've found the cnet.com downloads to be very reliable. Here's a starting point: http://download.cnet.com/windows/

If you're truly starting over, you should think about moving to a Firefox browser / Thunderbird email setup. I've been using that for about 2 years, and it's great.

2. Ye gods, that was fast! Sixteen minutes!!!
I have XP (having escaped both Vista and 7 so far) and have been happy with it.

I have been in Firefox for years and am fond of it (keep hearing about Google Chrome but I picked up a nasty virus in Google images one time and seem to have PTSD about anything Google).

I tried several times to figure out how to back up my address book but could never figure out how to do it -- tried dragging the icon to a flash drive and that seemed to do nothing (or at least there's no trace on the flash drive).

If I HAD been smart enough to back up my address book in Outlook Express, could it then be transferred to Thunderbird? Academic question, since it's too late now.

3. Yes, Thunderbird has a great import utility
basically click on "import", and in comes your Outlook address book.

If you're using Firefox, then I'd suggest skipping Outlook, and get the Thunderbird email program. It's not significantly different from Outlook Express, and will be simple to set up.

You can get it here: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/

4. BTW, to back up your Thunderbird emails, etc
there are just 3 files to copy (to a CD-ROM, thumb-drive, or whatever), all in one directory. I do that about once a week.

Instructions on how to do that are here: http://email.about.com/od/mozillathunderbirdtips/qt/et_backup_prof.htm

5. There's also a great free program
Called MozBackup http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

It will back up (and restore) both Thunderbird and Firefox profiles, add-ons, bookmarks etc.

7. This sounds really good. Need to do that about once a week,
looks like. I do not want to go through this again.

Still can't figure out how I deleted Outlook, feel incredibly stupid and inept.

Well, yes, there are reasons for that . . . .

10. Thanks, I just gave that a try.

Easy to install and run. And it seemed to create a file about 1/2 the size of my other backup method.

I also like that it has a restore utility. I'm a little more confident that will work than surgically inserting my backed-up files into a recreated profile.

Thanks!

15. Yup, it's one of those little gems
That becomes indispensible. Very useful when setting up a new computer and you want to move or duplicate email and Firefox.

6. Thanks -- I got Thunderbird loaded and was astonished to see
e-mail addresses in the column on the left -- and then realized these must date from a couple years ago when I tried TB and decided not to use it (for reasons I no longer remember).

So I wrote an e-mail to a cyberbuddy, and everything seemed peachy except it won't send -- I was getting a "certification inadequate" or something-like-that box, and clicked around and got rid of that, but now it's telling me:

===========================
Sending of message failed.
Please verify that your Mail & Newsgroups account settings are correct and try again
===========================

I look at the Mail & Newsgroups box and can't see anything to change, and am so
dang tired I'm going to bed.

Thanks for your help and I'll try again tomorrow.

If and when I ever get e-mail up and running again, I will sure be backing it up!

nite

And now I really am going to bed.

11. This link might be helpful
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=288718 or Google "Thunderbird+Please configure your mail client to use authentication"

Sounds like you need to go into the set-up account and make sure your settings for POP3 and SMTP are correct. These are the locations where Thunderbird sends email to and receives e-mail from. Typically, it would be the mail server from your internet server provider.

12. Thanks for the help --
Are you suggesting I paste

"Thunderbird+Please configure your mail client to use authentication"

into the search bar of mozillazine, or google, or YouTube, or where would be the best place to search?

I googled "backing up computer files" on YouTube once and didn't get anything I could use -- obviously I should have come to DU back then and asked for help!

thank you. I can hardly believe these great responses from DU people -- but I have houseguests coming from out of state and will probably hold off for awhile before continuing the battle --

13. I found the link I posted using that phrase-
Edited on Wed Oct-05-11 01:58 PM by Old and In the Way
I'd use the Google or Bing search engine with that phrase (without the quotation marks). You could also Google "Thunderbird+backing up e-mails", etc to get more specific info about what you are trying to figure out. The Google search engine will check Youtube and return any relevant video's, based on your query...but I wouldn't try to do the search directly on Youtube - chances are you'll come up empty.

If you want to back up computer files, I use a pretty good free utility called FBackup http://www.fbackup.com/
It's about as simple and painless as you can get. You could actually backup your e-mails with this program automatically, as long as you know where the directory is that the e-mails/addresses are stored in...usually, the application (Thunderbird) should not be running when you do the back-up routine.

Hope that helps..

Check this out-
http://www.freeemailtutorials.com/mozillaThunderbird/backupRestore.cwd

It's a pretty good tutorial for use MozBackup for Thunderbird to backup your e-mails/addresses. I use MozBackup for my Firefox bookmarks and it works pretty slick.

14. Thanks again --
I found this in Mozillazine (how could I have been on Firefox for so many years and never become friends with Mozillazine???)

found this:
==============================================================
When Earthlink started enforcing use of smtpauth I could no longer
send email with Thunderbird. I struggled with this for days but finally
licked it! First I set up my settings.
<account>->->
I set Server Name to "pop.earthlink.net" w/ port 110
Then click . Under the SMTP tab I was not able to change the setting, so ...
I *shut down thunderbird*, then found the *prefs.js* file. Here are changes/additions
I made to the *prefs.js* file (w/ <username> replaced by my login username):

user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.auto_method", 1);
user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.hostname", "smtpauth.earthlink.net");
user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.port", 587);
user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.username", "<username>@earthlink.net");

I restarted Thunderbird and then was able to send out mail.
==============================================================
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=293119&highlight=smtpauth+working++earthlink

Since I haven't the foggiest freaking idea how to make it to the "*prefs.js* file," I am considering taking the advice of several other people on the 'zine thread, to wit: "Get rid of earthlink and get a decent provider."

If Earthlink is actually telling people they "don't support Thunderbird," something is seriously haywire.

16. Ha! I am not the only one having this problem --
Edited on Wed Oct-05-11 03:24 PM by Sal Minella
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=293119&highlight=smtpauth+working++earthlink

One poster said, since Earthlink offshored their support to India and the Philippines, their support staff is very friendly and helpful and totally clueless about what they're doing.

Apparently one guy was told Earthlink "does not support Thunderbird." Wowser.

Which explains another poster advising that the best course of action is to ditch Earthlink and get a decent provider.

So I will let this rest for the time being since e-mail is up and running on my new Mac, so I'm not closed off from the world, and I have out-of-town company coming in a couple days and have to go search for the vacuum cleaner (hope I can remember how to turn it on -- kidding -- it's a big square button -- I think.) But I would love to run TB on this computer, and run MacMail or whatever they call it on the Mac.

Anyway, thank you --
k
