Unimportant, idle questions about "favorites" ---

Presume that if you have a long list of favorites that can slow down your

computer?

How about the info that you might store at Yahoo -- in folder's there?

Does that slow down your computer if you have a lot of info stored there?


Re "favorites" in general --

Can anyone tell me how to alphabetize the list --

did it by accident the other day, but don't know how I did it -- ?????

Then, I also accidentally undid it and don't know how !!


Also, right next to the gold star for "favorites" there's another gold star

for the "favorite tool bar" -- if you accidentally hit that gold star instead

of the first one, it SHOWS the webite you were working with at the time and I

don't know how to get rid of those notations/listings?



This is all unimportant stuff -- but presume there are simple answers to it --

which, needless to say, I don't seem to have -- !!


Here's another one -- how often should you vacuum your computer fan -- ??

Or do you just dust it?

1. What a list!

1. Favourites
A long list will not slow your computer down at all however, a full cache may slow your browser down. If using Firefox, Tools>Options>Privacy> --check box to clear history on shutdown, also Tools>Options>Advanced - Offline Storage - Clear now.

To sort alphabetically (remember, I'm using Firefox 3.6, so may be different for you) - Bookmarks>Organise Bookmarks. Then in the left hand pane, right click on Bookmarks Menu and select Sort By Name.

If you are using IE, look for similar commands and try them out.

2. Cleaning dust
Be super careful about putting a vacuum cleaner near computer parts. Very easy to touch metal-to-metal and do serious damage. Depending on where you keep your computer, it will need more or less cleaning. I've found that a box that sits on the floor, on carpet, gets the most crap inside it. Double that if you have cats or dogs!

I keep a few cans of Air Duster - highly compressed air - and every time I open the box, clean the dust out paying particular attention to the power supply, CPU heatsink and fan and video card. No point in just dusting and letting the dust settle in another spot. I blow it all down to the bottom of the case and remove with either plastic vacuum nozzle or bristle brush and pan.

What's a "full cache" vs a long list of links to favorites?

Think my history pretty much clears on a two day basis -- so I'll take a look at that,

as well.

Re my "favorites" when I hit "organize" I don't see an option to alphabetize.

But I think I have a separate "bookmarks" category so I'll check that later.

2. I'll be interested in the replies of those who know.

I was under the impression that items in "Favorites" would not slow down the computer. If they do, I have a lot of sites to get rid of. I save them if there is an interesting point I should remember but find that I rarely go to those sites.
Be happy to spend some time to delete if it makes a difference.

4. My experience -- which is worth very little -- is that I usually clear out FAV LINKS about

three time a year -- and every time, the computer seems to moves faster --

but that may have to do with I/E browser more than computer itself as one of

the replies suggests?

He didn't respond re Yahoo though and I also have a lot of info there --


I usually save LINKS until I have a chance to look them over and then get rid

of them -- recently I got way behind in eliminating links -- probably more than

a year since I did it!!


Let's see if anyone else comes along with more advice -- I can always use it!!

A big list of favorites will not slow down anything, except when IE wants to refresh the icons associated with each favorite. From what I can tell, the icons are updated only when you open the folder containing those favorites.

To sort your favorites in IE, open the folder you want to sort, right-click on a favorite, select "sort by name". You can also drag them into any order you want.

I am not sure what you mean by "info that you might store at Yahoo -- in folder's there". Are you referring to emails you have in folders at Yahoo Mail? If so, you are not slowing down YOUR computer because the data is stored on THEIR server.

To get rid of extra tool bars, right click in any of the toolbar area and uncheck that bar.

I would not attempt to vacuum out my computer. I would use those cans of compressed air to blow it out.
