Can anyone recommend a good email account to replace gmail/yahoo, etc?

I am getting tired of all the privacy issues with the "big" email providers, and yet need something in addiction to my dsl provider email.

Would appreciate any recs.
did I mention it has to be free?

3. I've never had

Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail accounts. Use Fastmail for webmail (on CF's list) and I've been very happy with it for over ten years.

4. I use Whidbey Telecom

I like it because I can talk to a tech rep whenever I need to and I know the owner.
