I'm kind of an idiot. Help me please.
I'm just trying to set up a simple FTP server to swap files with a buddy of mine who lives on the east coast.

I'm using War FTPD.

Setup goes great and an anonymous user can connect, see the files/folders and download, but when I setup a user with a login/password they can connect normally and see the folders, but they can't access any files. The folders appear empty.

I'm sure I'm missing some easy thing, but I can't figure out where I'm going wrong here.

Anyway, any help or advice you might provide would be great. I'd be glad to provide more details if necessary.

(I'm using Windows 98 - btw)

1. Why do you want an ID'd user when anonymous works fine?
FWIW, this sounds like a security "feature" but I'd have to investigate.

3. Because I'd rather not allow anyone to access my files

5. Ok. That is sensible.
In looking at what I can find on the web, it appears that War FTPD supports fairly elaborate user management, to the level of specifying individually what each user can see. I would guess that you need to spend some time with that. This may be helpful:

6. That was helpful
And you were right, the user management system was tripping me up a bit. I needed to make sure I set the file access in the top most level and then it automatically applied itself to the user.

So I got it figured out.

Thanks for the help.

2. Are you behind a firewall?
if so, might want to try a passive download.... Or if your user is...

4. No. No firefall on either end
But the connections are being made, the other PC can see the directories + folders, but the files within are not visible.

When you click on the share folder (where all my files are) there is nothing inside.
