how do you stop windows XP home from automatically detecting USB hardware?

I'm having trouble installing a printer because of the add hardware wizard

1. Not sure you can, easily.
Just cancel the wizard when it shows up and install the drivers from the disk.

2. what if you have no disk and are installing downloaded drivers?

3. Did the drivers come with their own .exe?
If so, simple cancel the wizard and install them with the .exe.
Otherwise, you can use the hardware installer to point to the driver folder... "have own disc", etc.

4. Try This:
-Disconnect the printer from the PC
-Reboot the PC
-Run the setup program that came with the drivers
-At some point during the install, the install program will tell you to plug the printer into the PC and power it up.

The setup program should detect the printer and the install should complete.
