I would not be surprised if the install did activate a virus. It did on mine.
As you know, they make you uninstall the old version before you install the new one. Somewhere in this process, it activated 2 viruses that the old norton had allowed in to the system. Norton did the same thing, recommending that they have permission so I automatically clicked it during the install. I noticed that the modem lights were flashing like crazy even though nothing was connected to the internet, so I checked further and found these 2 were viruses transmitting. I blocked them and tightened up the security in the firewall. Then I started getting these notifications that a remote system is attempting to access your computer. Permit always (recommended)... I blocked about a dozen of them before they quit. They were from all over, IP's registerd in China and Europe. Really weird.
To make a long story short, I wound up taking the computer to a shop to get rid of the virus, they installed AVG, uninstalled Norton. I got a router to use for a firewall. My computer is running WAY better and I feel more secure.
Now I'm going to fight with NOrton for a refund.
