Any Opera users here?

I have been trying Opera. One thing I noticed on DU with Opera is that the "Top" button at the end of each post does not seem to work in Opera. It does work in Firefox.

I am impressed with Opera. I like the way everything including email, news, and RSS is incorporated into the browser motif. Opera seems to contain several features that are available only with extensions in Firefox.

1. The Top link thing isn't Opera's fault

It's the lack of a named target anchor that's causing it. Since the behavior in this case is undefined in the HTML specs, it's left up to the browser vendors. Firefox and IE will scroll to the top of a document, Opera will ignore a hashed link to nowhere. Either action is "correct". Adding a named anchor to the page -- <a name="top"></a> -- would fix it so that all browsers do the same thing.

I think the "top" link is a nice addition to DU. It is good for long threads.

I still primarily use Firefox. One extension I can't do without is Spellbound. DU has a spell checker but a lot of sites do not. I have not found an equivalent feature for Opera.

I don't use it, although I have in the past, and one of my friends uses it exclusively.

Regarding what you mention about features, Opera and Firefox were developed according to somewhat different philosophies. The "missing" features of Firefox aren't intended to be there. In fact large battles wage among the developers over what features should be included, and it always seems to end up as an argument over what eventually happened with Netscape -- bloatware, software with so many features no one even knows what they all are, and they bog down the system on which it runs.

Opera has avoided doing that well by using a certain model. Firefox uses a different model in its attempt to avoid it. Both are valid.

4. I grabbed the beta v 9 last night

to try out the new content blocking features, but Firefox + Adblock extension is still much better in that regard. Opera is great, but I love the extensions for Firefox. "Widgets" are a new feature in Opera 9, which serve as extensions, but it'll be a while before they catch up with those for Firefox, I think.

5. I use Opera sometimes

it is fast and streamlined. But for most of my needs I find Firefox the most useful.
