Going nuts here. Is there a reason why I can see pics

sent via e-mail from some people, and not others? Any idea whether it's my settings, Firefox, my ISP?

:banghead:

Also, do you recommend upgrading Firefox regularly? I've only done the install months ago, and realize it's probably been upgraded.

Thanks!

1. Check to see what format the pictures are in
Are they jpegs, gifs, or an obscure format that requires a specific program to open?

2. I believe they're sent as .jpegs, but
all I get is the small box w/the 'x' in it. Can't copy, save, nada.

3. If you are using Thunderbird
the default setting (I believe) is to "block loading of remote images" except for messages from people in your address book. This is a security measure, since spammers and other criminals often use the email clients ability to go onto the internet to retrieve an "invisible" image as a way of confirming the validity of an email address, thus boosting its value to other spammers and increasing the likelihood it will be resold.

If you are using Thunderbird, you can change this setting by opening Tools/Options/Advanced and changing the setting there, but a better approach, if these are in fact remote images, would be to add the people to your address book.

If this is what is happening, you should see a message at the top of the email, above the "subject" line, noting that remote images have been blocked, with an option to unblock them on a case by case basis. Otherwise, the problem has some other cause.

4. Not using Thunderbird as far as I know; never heard
of it.But I will go check the Earthlink spam blocker; maybe I can downgrade the spam alert.
It's odd, because there's only certain images from certain computers (like my sister's) that are being blocked.
I also have to log onto DU everytime I visit; won't let me stay logged in.
Scratching head here; can you tell I'm not well versed in computereze?
Do you know if Firefox might have anything to do with this?

5. Thunderbird is the email client that is a part of the same project that

produced Firefox for web browsing. Many people who use Firefox for web pages also use Thunderbird for email (and newsgroups), which is why I guessed you might be using it. If you are using Earthlink's software for handling email, your best bet would be to talk with their customer service. Firefox does nothing with (or to) email; it just loads web pages.

As for upgrading Firefox, it is now at version 1.5.01. If you are using something earlier than 1.0, I would strongly recommend upgrading because those earlier versions were still somewhat experimental. I would recommend upgrading anyway, but not so strongly. Download the current version, Use the control panel "add/remove programs" to remove the old version, then install the new one. Your bookmarks and such will not be affected.

To stay logged on to DU (or other sites) go to tools/options/privacy/cookies and, assuming that "allow sites to set cookies" is unchecked, hit the "exceptions" button and type democraticunderground.com in the box that comes up. Then hit the "allow" button and then close the dialogue boxes. This is how the munu bar is structured in the current version, but it may be somewhat different in the version you are using.

(Edit to add) If you are not actually getting your email sent to your computer, but just viewing it through some web page on the Earthlink server, it is possible some setting under tools/options/privacy/content may be relevant, but I'm not very familiar with how that kind of arrangement might work.
