I have the latest and greatest of access, our neighborhood is wired for Verizon FiOS, a high speed fiber optic internet connection.
However, I am using our old Pentium 3 computer running Windows 98se.

Lately, I have had a problem when I click on an icon to go to a different page. The page won't load. If I am persistent, I can usually click stop, refresh or close the window and click on the icon again and eventually get the page to load.

I do NOT get a low memory warning when the page doesn't load. I only have 384MB memory.
I am wired through an old Linksys Wireless-B router.
I have a McAfee firewall.

It can sit there for hours with an unloaded blank screen if I walk away to do something else.

I have cleaned out my cache and cookies and it still does it.

I have Ad-Aware and also some Symantec software to get rid of spy ware, so that isn't clogging the system.

My Symantec system check-up tools run every night.

I defrag at least once a week.

Does anyone know why my PC seems to hang (sometimes) when I load new web pages?
No, I cannot make it do it at will, but it is beginning to happen more and more but still intermittently.

1. Symantec software is a red flag for me

they are known resource hogs. One other thing you can check is your start up list. I will give you the path to check it, If you already know how I apologize.
You can check it by clicking start
Click RUN
type in msconfig click OK
click startup.
This will show some of what is running at startup.
I have my antivirus checked, firewall, system tray, and scanregistry thats all and my computer runs great. Every program wants on this list at startup and it is not needed.

3. There's something else...

I get flamed for this, but my husband needs AOL to feel warm and fuzzy. AOL puts a lot of things in the startup and if you take them out, it puts them back in there.

I am thinking that my Wireless router is getting old and forgetful. I am not currently using it, but I had it hooked up for when I do want to use it. Verizon gave me a wired router I can use instead. I haven't put it into service yet. Maybe I should.

2. Win98 never really deletes anything

you hit the delete key on cookies, etc. and the screen blanks and it looks like they're gone but they're not really gone. Windoze just hides them. Run the following

To delete old Win98 files

On bootup hit F8 and choose command prompt option. You can’t exit to DOS and do this.

Type the following commands-hit enter after each one.

SMARTDRV

CD WINDOWS

DELTREE /Y COOKIES

DELTREE /Y HISTORY

DELTREE /T TEMP

DELTREE /Y TEMPOR~1

The last two may take awhile. Then reboot into Windows and run defrag.

4. You can also use

a program called Ccleaner..http://www.ccleaner.com/
It will remove lots of garbage off your computer. I use it daily with great results. First time users will remove many MB.
Just be careful of cleaning the regs (Issues) unless you know what you are cleaning. But it is safe it will not clean the regs unless you tell it to.

6. I have to give up too much to get it.

First of all they wanted to sell me a Mortgage like the Spam I delete daily and then they gave me an option of NetFlix, Video Professor or a free credit report. I don't want any of those offers either, so I bailed out. Thanks anyway

It appears you do not have a popup blocker or you have spyware on your machine. That is one of the reasons your machine is not working properly.

I saw "PC Cleaner" and thought that was it.

5. Will that delete my "live" cookies or just the deleted ones?

I use the Norton utilities to do the deleting for me. Do I still need to do this command level delete?
Will it delete all my cookies? I try to save my DU password cookie and some others to avoid memorizing so many passwords.

Off the wall question. Is there any way I can find out a password on my computer if I have forgotten it? I have tried all the passwords I would think I used, but since I restored it after I reformatted my C: drive I haven't had access. This is to a software package, not a MS file. My cousin said there were software programs like safecracker, but they seem to refer to a specific program and this one is not on the list.

8. No it does not delete your

password cookies. If you reformatted your C drive I'm sure you had to reinstall the software and usually what you need is the License number not a password. If you bought the software online you may be able to contact them.

I want to keep it and all my other login cookies so I don't have to login again everywhere.

11. There is a checkbox for "cookies" under "Internet Explorer" and

after clicking the "Applications" tab, for Firefox. Be sure that, whichever you use, the "cookies" box is unchecked. I use Firefox and trust it to handle security and bloat issues safely, so unchecked everything there, and recommend you use it also. But stay away from the "issues" options, which are all unchecked, unless you are sure about what you are doing. If you use Firefox, use the "Tools/Options/Privacy/View Cookies" interface to clean out any unwanted garbage that may be there. There is probably some similar option for IE, but I don't know how that browser is set up.
