Buy Belkin.
I had one of their 802.11b wireless routers, and the other day changed up to the "Pre-N" MIMO router (the one with three antennas). The damn thing's "installer wizard" even has a version for Mac OS9!
I ran the wizard, and except for one hiccup (which only required repeating one step) and I was up and running - in seven minutes.
We have a 3,000+ square-foot house, which is L-shaped to boot, and this new router transmits a usable signal into every single part of it, even though the router is off in the ell in my office. Works even in the basement, all rooms upstairs, outside in the screen porch, everywhere.
And that's with an 802.11b card in the old Powerbook. (Second plug: It's an AeroCard from MacSense. Helluva product as well.)
Disclaimer: I have NO relationship with Belkin except as a satisfied customer.
