Even being a MCSE and A+ and all that crap...this one has got me stumped. :)

I have to fix this Lady's computer..fine.
I have to save her files (which..NATURALLY..she has not back up)..fine.

$#%@#$ Norton (Can you tell I hate Norton?), is installed as Norton "Go-Back".. fine.
except that norton is corrupted and every time I try to boot the computer, Norton starts first,
..asks if I want to restore the system:
If I say yes, the computer boots again.
If I say No, "" "" "" ""
If I try to disable Norton, ..same thing.

Fine... I take hard disk out, put in mine (as slave) ..system is "Type 44" which
Windows doesn't "See"
Partition magic sees it but can't do anything with it.

Yes I tried Fdisk/MBR
yes I tried to fix MBR.

I know that Norton puts the Go-Back crap as a bootable Bin file..

But I can't get to it.. AAAAGGGHHHH!

1. Roughly:

Make your slave a master (switch the jumpers if necessary).
Tell the BIOS about your slave disk.
That probably mean getting the BIOS basic config menu to go ask it about itself.
Then make sure the BIOS boots to your disk.
Then you ought to be able to look at things.

2. A Bit Cryptic.

You will need to be more specific.

1. The pc does or does not load Windows?
2. What version of Windows are we talking about?
3. Give an explanation of how the drive is partitioned.
4. Can you boot to safe mode?
5. When you say the drive is being seen as a type 44, is this reported by the BIOS or by Windows?

4. Answers First....My solution

1. does not
2. XP
3. one Partition...40 meg
4. No
5. Put drive as slave (on mine) Partition Magic reports as "Type 44"

I FINALLY "got to" the drive.

I used assembly language...then wiped MBR..then started to install NT 4...
after NT 4 installed start-up files, I turned it off (Computer) Put drive back in
My system and was able to get to files..
