So my WAN light on my DI-604 router is flashing....
...flickering, as if I were downloading or uploading some serious data. However, there is no network traffic to speak of, and this WAN light issue occurs with both computers turned off and physically unplugged from the network.

Do I need a new router? I'm thinking so....

1. stupid question - did you unplug it and plug it back in?
That's happened to me, and that is the fix, but you just didn't say you tried that in your msg...

2. Oh, yes.
Unplug, plug in, leave unplugged overnight, reset the device, daubed it with divine oils (j/k)....

The oddest thing is, it does this all by itself. Even when everything else is unplugged from it... and there's no network traffic when I connect my PC directly to the cable modem.

3. It could be talking to the cable modem (DHCP comes to mind).
Or something out on the net.
Or you could be getting port scans that the cable modem is letting through.
I usually see small amounts of traffic between the router and the modem, perhaps not as much as you are suggesting.
The router might be trying to do something and failing, and trying again, over and over ...
I would suggest you look into the configuration of the modem and router before resorting to more radical solutions.

4. Stupid question 2 - is it otherwise WORKING?

It's normal. There's a lot of "background noise" on broadband
connections, so most of that flashing is just that...

5. Working fine...
...but this is constant. It hasn't stopped in days.

Why did it just start doing this within the past week? It never did this before....

weird.

6. See if you can borrow such a router from a friend for a test...
Otherwise, I'd look into buying another one, at the very least as a backup.

7. It's old, anyway...
...and routers aren't really all that expensive.

I think I'll just get a new one. What I was really concerned about was that someone was leeching data off my drive, but like I said, it happens even with both PCs physically disconnected from the network.

Router issue; it may be in the process of kicking over the traces. Ah, well.

If your internal light isn't blinking, then you're not exporting data, however...

Here's a tip. If you're thinking about getting a wireless router (with wired ports) I would recommend you spending a little more and getting one with the "MIMO" technology. If wireless is of any future interest, so will be MIMO.

AVOID manufacturer specific speed enhancers - MIMO is the way to go if you're looking at a new wireless router... (again, if it's an option)

edited because it seems I spend more time rewriting than writing!
