Nilla's been asleep for 4 days, sans eating and

litterbox twice a day.

This morning, at breakfast, he only came down the stairs halfway and fell asleep on the stairs. I had to pick him up and bring him to his food dish where he woke up again and started eating. Then promptly went back to sleep.

No cat is THIS tired.

He seems like he's not sick. He purrs when I pet him even though he's sleeping.

Is this because he's growing and needs to sleep? He's an 8month old flame point Siamese.

Is this normal or do I need a vet now. From what I can tell, the cat has not been awake even 10 minutes total a day for 4 days now.


This was taken a month ago when he used to sleep a lot but not like now.

I've never had cats but I would be very concerned if he was one of my dogs. He's a beauty!!

Siamese are usually spastic at this age, mine was a regular Tasmanian devil. Even now at 7 years old he doesn't sleep all day if I am home.

4. Okay, I'm at work

I'm going to call the vet from here.

It was scaring me all weekend and my mom kept assuring me that that he's probably fine, just tired. Clearly something is wrong.

5. The vet suggested Anemia.

Since he's not vomiting and doesn't have diarreah, I can take him in on Saturday - my day off.

One thing though, I just remembered that I gave him chicken - his first chicken ever, right before he lapsed into this. I'm a vegetarian so obviously I coudln't taste it to see if it was bad.
Is there anything in meat that could do this to a cat? Perhaps a virus.

...although I would think that, if it was food poisoning from bad chicken, he would be showing the gastrointestinal symptoms your vet mentioned. The same would be the case if he had gotten into anything while outside at night.

Did you mention to the vet that he's always been a sleepier-than-normal cat?

make sure they check that too. Hypos can get really tired.

No I didn't mention he has always slept more than normal. He was always a big sleeper but not like this.

The thyroid idea is a very good one to check out.

Yesterday he only slept again.

This morning he got up and came all the way down stairs by himself when he heard the cat food cans being opened. He ate with no problem. But then he was staying pretty still and was sleepy.

I know he went back to sleep after I left, which was right after he ate

So better today, but still very very tired cat.

Mismatch - my 18yo cat now steps over him and passes next to him when walking by. Mr. Sleeping beauty no longer scares her. All of the other cats have been licking his face while he sleeps.

9. Nilla update

Nilla was awake some last night.

He didn't go outside with the other cats or run around. He did come down stairs and eat, especially the Vanilla ice cream. His name is Vanilla("nilla").

This morning he got up, came down and ate a lot, and then made it all the way back upstairs to my bedroom again, lay down and went back to sleep.

So he's much better - 2 days ago he was not able to get himself around.

He's still tired and out but now he's not as out as he was before.

10. He may just have some minor illness...

...not unlike the common cold in humans. Something that isn't dangerous, but that will knock you out for a couple of days.

I'm glad he's feeling better.

I don't even remember when the photo was taken. Had to be in the last 4 months as nilla has doubled size in the last 4 months.

Last night he went out for the first time. He was up all weekend. He's been better since Friday but still wasn't going out.

But now he is much better.

I had a new stray show up and spend the night at my place and Nilla was one of the biggest to give him/her the where for.

I kicked my cats out of my room and let the new cat sleep on my bed last night but the cat didn't like having my cats gang up on him and left this moring, I believe to find a one cat household.

Crumb I was hoping he'd stay. My cats are ticked at me. Nilla very mad.

16. Flea collars

My vet told me last night that it probably was Nillas flea collar making him sick and they advise everyone not to use flea collars because they are toxic and killing pets. She said cats are going into seizures from the flea collars.

She said it's because fleas resist the chemicals and so the manufactures are making them more potent.

What I think happend though(yes I admit fleas are evolving to resist the chemicals) is that the flea collar manufactures had to compete with companies like frontline flea drops and so made their collars far more potent. I know this because I noticed my cats when wearing the colars have no fleas what-so-ever. I never saw flea collars work that well before. I'm in a 6 cat household with cats going outside 4 hours a night.

Someone told me years ago that any collar strong enough to kill the fleas would most likely kill the animal. So we never use flea collars. We got a BAD flea infestation in 1989 and our dog, Sundance, was allergic to all flea preparations. We were fresh out of options until my brother told me to feed him brewer's yeast tablets. I'll admit that I thought my brother had lost his marbles, but I was willing to try anything. The fleas were all gone within two weeks of starting the brewer's yeast. Sundance lived until 2002 and never had another flea on him.

Our four cats don't ever get fleas, even though they're outside on the patio almost every day. (Maybe we just don't have fleas in our yard ... how likey is that in S FL?) They don't get brewer's yeast, but they do get B complex vitamins in their food. I'm SO afraid of putting chemicals on my animals that I would probably try every folk remedy known to man before I put any of those drops or collars or dips on them. Call me paranoid.

You probably saved a lot of animals by posting that info about the flea collars. I'm sorry Nilla was so sick and very glad he's better now! He's a beautiful kitty ... just gorgeous!

18. I had a half persian

several years ago...dear Doufus...who would be walking across the room and fall asleep in mid stride. Turned out he had narcolepsy. The vet put him on speed and he was fine.

But try explaining to people who like snooping in your medicine cabinet that yes, the speed is for the cat.
