how loud does your cat purr?

We have 5 cats.

Purr level of 5: Kudra, Dutchess and Poohkah are average size cats

Gato is a big boy, weighs in over 20lbs and he's really big (nickname is catzilla) - his purr barely registers a 1. You have to put your head on his chest to hear it

our latest addition is Calypso, she's still a kitten about 14 weeks old, probably weighs 3-4 lbs -- but she purrs like a Hoover vacuum cleaner... definitely a 10 on the purr level. Sometimes she purrs sooo loud it drowns out my partner's snoring

Especially when they curl up on the bed in the morning :)

2. Pad Thai does everything loud

(he even yawns loud) and his purr is about an 8. Lily does everything quiet and her purr is about a 6.

3. I asked the vet why kittens purr more loudly than adult cats

and he said it's just because when they grow up there's more cat surrounding the purr to muffle it.

Doesn't it seem that sometimes they rev their engines to be lots louder than usual? Kashka always had a loud motor, sometimes can hear her 2 or 3 rooms away. But sometimes when she's extra blissed out it gets even louder and she does these grunting sounds along with it. I think she is part siamese because all her vocalizations are loud and expressive (and has soft siamese texture fur)

10. I'd rate Boots' purr between a 4 and a 5

Mr. Mobile is pretty big, so his size muffles the purrbox.

Rule of thumb: the smaller the feline, the louder the purr.

11. Most of mine are about a 5 but

Ayja is a 10 on a quiet day. We used to have a 15...he sounded like two cats purring. He really did have a double purr. The vet finally said that he thought he was born with a birth defect, can't remember what he called it but since he was healthy and all said not to worry about it.

12. Mine was like an 8, but do any of yours drool when they're purring.

Her nickname was Drivel Drooler. She like to be held with her paws and head over my shoulder for hours, and would drool all down my back, it was gross, but the things we do for love.

Now, I get pooped on by my parrot.

13. Ches and Something

Ches was 22 when he passed on. Not a drooler but a big-time purrer, even at the end.

The vet could never hear his heart - the minute anyone touched him the purr motor went to full rev - this included the vet and the stethoscope. The vet even had a note on his chart - Big PURR.

Another cat we had - Something - (yeah that was her name) was a drooler when she purred, kneaded and rubbed all over you.

14. I just lost an 11.

Symba was always a little cat--eight or nine pounds at most, and dowm to four at the end. Her purr-to-cat ratio was the highest ever, though; she was easily audible across a large room.

We never knew why.

one's name is MOTOR (we call him Moe for short) That ought to tell you how loud he purrs!
