... HippieDog Hank fell (or wiggled, I'm not exactly sure) out the window of the car as I was driving him and Ray to the park this evening. He was shook up, but thankfully knew better than to wander into traffic. No broken bones, but apparently internal injuries. Bleeding badly from his rectal area. He's at the vet now, they're doing x-rays etc.

5. Thanks everyone ...

... he's home. Very sad and sorta disoriented (meds have worn off but he's probably REALLY stiff and sore) ... apparently in the fall from the car he got bruised up pretty good, a couple minor cuts and scratches on his rear paws, and also managed somehow to tear a laceration on the underside of his tail, very near the rectum. So now we have 2 weeks of trying to keep him from pushing too hard to poop so he doesn't tear his sutures and/or infect himself.

But ultimately, the xrays and such were clear -- there's no hidden injuries, thank Goddess.

I'm gonna go throw up now.

Must have been quite a scare but the relief of having him ok would probably prompt me to bow to the porcelain god as well.

Of course, I am curious how you are going to encourage him not to "push too hard". I don't suppose the vet explained how exactly you're supposed to communicate that with him? :)

8. very soft diet for awhile ...

... he just finished a banana popsicle, and isn't showing any interest in other food (i also scrambled him an egg).

I think he's really, really sore and still a little bit disoriented.

I keep having to remind myself how allover-achy I'd be the next day if I fell from a moving vehicle. :(

Poor little guy is probably feeling crummy in a dozen different ways. Are you giving him aspirin or some kind of pain killer?

Oh and I'm guessing he's going to be a spoiled little guy by the time he gets back on his feet again. :)

If he is going to be getting antibiotics, I would give him some acidophilus as well, so as to avoid the added discomfort of abdominal upset and diarhhea.
You can get capsules at a pharmacy or healthfood store, and either put them right in his food or open them up into his food. You can get them in a non-dairy base.
It is also available in liquid form.

I think that he should get some with each dose of meds. Acidophilus can do him no harm. It will just restore the healthy intestinal flora that the antibiotics will destroy.

18. Thank you ~ that is today's drama ...

We're exhausted.... the soft food and antibiotics are giving him diahrrea, and it drives dogs nuts in regular circumstances - now with the area shaved, an open wound and stitches right there - combined with his current 'constant urge to poop' from the trauma ... well, he's been a wild man.

Chasing himself in panicked circles around the living room trying to get to his butt.
Actually BROKE his head-cone from running into furniture, walls and stuff.

I had to take him into the vet-ER at 4 am this morning because he was so agitated ... they injected him with a sedative and gave me some doggie tranqs to cover the next few days.

My worst fear is if he figures out how to butt-scoot, he's going to tear his whole rear end open. :scared: How the heck am I going to leave him to go to work Monday ?

19. Cottage cheese & Rescue Remedy...

Just my humble opinions...

Cottage cheese is soft food, dogs love it, and it will stop the diahrrea. Instead of his regular food tomorrow morning, give him an equivalent amount of cottage cheese and the diahrrea should slow during the day and stop that evening after eating a dinner of cottage cheese...

Rescue Remedy -- from your local 'health food store' -- it is a flower essence that works miracles for dogs who are anxious because of thunder storms, travel, and medical situations.



Also about his tail: Neosporin speeds healing - I believe in it!

As for Monday, can you come home mid-day to check on him or maybe even get part of the day off?

... I've got:
"Animax" - apparently a veterinary kind of Neosporin - steroid/antibiotic/anti-itch cream;
"Carprofen" - pills, similar to Benadryl - an anti-inflammatory, anti-itch;
"Acepromazine" - pills, doggie downers;
and
"Clovamax" - pills, antibiotics.

I also have a small syringe to give him water - he's not drinking on his own and hasn't peed
(that I've seen) since Thursday.

I can come home for the lunch hour, yeah - but I worked from here Friday and didn't get alot
done, plus I have meetings on Monday mornings, so I can't take the whole day off. Maybe I'll ask about working from home afternoons this week. That seems like a reasonable compromise.

Stitches et al seem to be doing ok, he actually wagged his tail at me Sunday morning.
No recent oozing or gooey skid marks being left behind.

Diharrea has stabilized - normal colored w/no blood in the stool, he finally drank a bunch of water Sunday afternoon and peed in the evening.

I still have to heavily medicate him and pretty much put him in a head lock in order to clean and put the anti-itch ointment back there; I suspect that's going to be an ongoing battle.

When Hank sleeps, I sleep. (Ray LaBeagle pretty much sleeps all the time :) )

And perhaps the biggest relief of all, his insurance coverage considers it a 'moving vehicle' injury not just a regular injury, so will cover up to $2000.00.
