New Greyhounds have arrived and are looking for a home...

check out the Adopt me section: http://reghr0.tripod.com/id1.html

adoption applications are available for download if you are interested

Sunglow looks like a real sweetie, if we didn't already have a houseful of critters we'd be real tempted...

adoption fees: $140 for greyhounds who have NOT been spayed/neutered

$250 for those greyhounds who ARE spayed/neutered

Most asked FAQ: Aren't they hyper/active dogs?

answer: no. Yes they run fast, however greyhounds are often said to be 45mph couch potatoes. The greyhound is a sprinter, not a distance runner. Like all dogs, they do need their exercise. Unlike a terrier - greyhounds do have an "OFF" button. A greyhound will RACE you to the couch/bed/futon or any other comfy place.

A greyhound will run around the backyard for 15-20 minutes, then they will be looking for a couch to lay on. We have 2 greyhounds (ages 4 & 7) and a 10 year old Airedale (largest of the terrier breeds) -- after being in the yard for a bit the greyhounds just want to eat their "cookie" and a place to sleep -- the Airedale is still wound up and raring to go.

because they are sprinters and not distance runners - if you are looking for a jogging partner, you would need to build up their stamina over time. Most retired racers are only use to running on grass, sand or other soft surfaces, so jogging on a hard surface, such as a road, means the greyhound will need to build up their paws to avoid blisters/cuts. Just take it in moderation until the greyhound gets use to it and you'll have a wonderful pal for jogging.

2nd most FAQ: What about cats? I've heard greyhounds are not good with cats.

answer: Like other dog breeds, some are good with cats and some aren't. A reputable rescue organization would have already screened a greyhound for "cat safety". This also includes being around other small animals and kids.

As previously stated we have 2 greyhounds -- and we have 5 cats. We've also fostered greyhounds over the past year or so - haven't had a problem with any of the greyhounds going after the cats.

1. Ack - I should never look at these!
I want the last one....Sunglow. Now, if I were only on the east coast and didn't already have 3 dogs!

I've decided that as I lose my puppies to old age - which will be awhile, they're all between 5 and 6, that I'm going to adopt older dogs that have a hard time getting adopted out. One of the breeds I've always been interested in are Greyhounds. One question - what's their average life span?

2. I know
We didn't want to go through the whole deal with training a puppy
either...

yeah, and if we didn't already have 3 dogs and 5 cats we'd be adopting Sunglow too

but in answer to your question - average lifespan is 11-12 years,
but some go longer than that

their biggest "health problem" is bone cancer or another type that I can't remember - but both types usually strike the legs
