Any vets here?
Edited on Sat Feb-16-08 07:55 AM by Tab
This concerns my coprophragic Shih-Tzu (or should I say, "shit-zu").

This is the most disgusting thing - I can't even "taint" the material because he likes it "hot off the press", shall we say, sometimes before it even hits the ground (from our other dogs), or his own.

He's a wonderful dog in every other way, but this just grosses us out. We have five dogs, he's the only one that displays this behavior.

Is it a vitamin deficiency? Or just something we'll have to tolerate? (I suspect the latter).

Excuse me, I have to barf now.

1. Eww.
Can't help you with that (not a vet and I've only ever had cats), but sorry, it's kinda funny... Good luck. Maybe you should get a cat; some dogs like to mine litter boxes.

2. Alas, I'm allergic to cats
We have 5 dogs, I love them all, although some I'd like to throttle at times, but this is a not uncommon but very gross habit of some dogs. I tried to be as delicate as possible in my post, but it really grosses me out. Beyond that, I love the Shih Tzu. I'd only own them from now on if this isn't typical of their breed.

3. Unfortunately, not an uncommon behavior
Edited on Sat Feb-16-08 01:49 PM by MiniMe
Not a vet, but here is something that may work, at least for your own crew. Add a spoonful or 2 of cooked spinich to their food at each meal. Apparently it is pretty tasty going down, but after it has gone through the digestive system, it is really disgusting to dogs. Canned spinich will work, it is cooked. A relatively easy and inexpensive thing to try, and I like it because it is a pretty natural solution. I know several dogs this has worked for.

4. Two solutions
Work best in tandem.

Buy one of the products that you add to their food that makes their crap unpalatable and pick up your yard consistantly.

I've had one who does it also. Couldn't figure out why she was so fat. It turned out she was recycling (ewwwww) had to give the supplement to all of the dogs or she'd eat theirs instead of her - not that she wasn't already!

Good luck.

5. Try a few spoons of canned spinich in their food
Cheaper than the other stuff, and probably better for them.

16. my mom's old dachshund use to do that - vet told
her to add few tablespoons of canned greenbeans (uncooked) to her food

within a week - the dog stopped the aftermeal "snacking"

at one point my mom thought the habit was broken and stopped adding the greenbeans - dog went right back to 'snacking'

since you have multiple dogs, and the one in question isn't particular about the "brand" she's snacking - I'd give the greenbeans to all of them

12. Oddly enough, I've made that joke to my son
The Shih-Tzu eats, then, um, recycles, and also eats more. He is a chunky little guy. Waste not, want not.

I wouldn't really care except he likes to lick me sometimes. Then I start to thinkin'...

6. Spinach, huh?
I'll try that.

I don't want to make it every night, but if I just need to do it for a while to break him of his habit, I'd go for that.

Thanks!

7. The other thing you can use is a few shakes of
meat tenderizer...the kind with the papaya enzyme. That also works.

8. As ChinaCat said, I have heard of using Adolph's also
Spinich seems much healthier, but it is another alternative.

9. And remember, it will take a few meals for it to work through
So it probably won't work with the next poop.

13. I'll try to get some in the next day or two.
Although it's unclear if cooked or canned works. The less effort I have to put into it, the more the probability of success will be.

As for picking up the yard, it doesn't matter. First, we have five dogs - three are large - and it'd be impossible. Second, he likes it "fresh" so it wouldn't matter anyway.

(sigh)

I never knew adulthood would be so gross. I'm 45, have had children and dogs.

There's nothing worse than coming home and finding your 8-month-old German Shepherd (this was many years ago) had a digestive problem and splattered your whole kitchen with... ah, let's not go there. Suffice it to say, it grossed me out. Children and dogs. I love them both, but sheesh...

14. Canned will work. Canned spinich has to be cooked before it is put
in the can.

11. The spinach has worked for me
Edited on Sun Feb-17-08 05:23 AM by sazemisery
When we had several rescue pointers in our kennel, I had one that would injure himself reaching for poo in the pen next door. I actually gave them all the spinach because they were eating a lot of grass when they were out in the exercise yard. I noticed that after a few days the offender was not, well you know.

Edited for use of excess letters.

15. One of my Cavaliers does this too
I feel your pain. The most adorable dog, yet...SO gross! Ours will stop eating his dog food to go outside if he sees that a fresh one is on the way. And we feed a human-grade holistic brand, so food quality is not the issue!

Does the spinach have to be cooked or canned, or does fresh work too?

17. I addition to spinach, I've heard from other dog people that
fig newtons are effective. Also pineapple.

My dog who had this habit passed away almost a year ago. I used commercial products such as DETER but they had no effect. Quick cleanup was the only solution for me.
