my &%$#^ cat. keeps peeing on my Tabriz carpet

AND he pooped on Mr MB's feet last night so we woke up to that unpleasantness this morning.

I am gonna lock him in the basement if he does not quit this behaviour.


Note - he is not sick - already did th vet trip. He has a clean litter box. HE JUST KEEPS PEEING EVERYWHERE and I am going to lose my mind :nuke::nuke:

1. That isn't normal behavior. If he didn't do that before and just started doing it

recently, there's something wrong. It might not be physical, but you might try a second opinion from a different vet, or an animal behaviorist. Years ago I had a cat who for some reason "forgot" about the litter box, and the vet said I should keep him confined to a small room, like a bathroom, with his litter box and his food and a bed, for about a week (with frequent visits). Since cats don't like to mess near their food, the theory is that he'll use the litter box to keep his pee and poo away from his food. It sounded weird, but I tried it and it worked. He howled for awhile when shut in the bathroom, but I came in to visit and play with him frequently. While he was locked up I thoroughly cleaned all the places he'd peed on with one of those enzyme cleaners you can get at pet shops. After I finally let him out he was fine -- he never ignored the litter box again and lived to the ripe old age of 21.

We put his litter box down in the basement (his favorite place) and he peed on the floor of the basement :banghead: too.

Mr MB (he's in charge of the cat, I get the dogs) is out of town for the week and so he will deal with it.

3. Now I'm guessing he doesn't like the litter,

or else he associates the box with something unpleasant and won't use it. One of the things my vet told me is that cats may quit using the box if they have a bladder infection or feline urinary syndrome (which can be very serious) because peeing is painful and they associate the box with the discomfort. I really think you should get him looked at again. There's also a product called CatAttract that is helpful in getting cats back to their boxes. Above all, don't punish him. Something is wrong.

5. I don't punish him - I just want him to stop peeing on the rugs...

I will try that CatAttract litter - there is a post below recommending it too.

Also, I am going to get another, larger box.

The opne we had was used by two other cats in the past, and perhaps he does not like that, but you would think he would have let me know 4 months ago about that when he first came.

I wonder if the weather getting nice has something to do with it....

4. Have you tried "cat attract" brand litter? It's got a 100% use

guarantee, so at least you would get a refund if it doesn't work out.Using Feliway around the house might also help.

6. Do they carry this at local grocery stores or do I

go to PetSmart for it?

Mr MB is the cat guy in our house and takes care of all that stuff.

9. More litter boxes might be the answer.

Since you have a multiple cat household... We had the same problem when we had three cats and one litter box. One ALWAYS went on the rug (six ruined rugs in two years) and would even go in front of us when we were watching. The vet cleared him for infections, etc., and we took him to a kitty psychologist (which made us feel good, but the kitty didn't really benefit from it) but nothing worked until every cat has his own box. Cats are all about territory. The enzyme cleaner is necessary, get rid of everything with old 'mistakes' on it, and grab an extra litter box. That's the only thing that worked for us. Good luck!

10. We don't have a multi-cat household - I should have

been more clear. The litter box we have was used by our two previous cats....one now lives with DUer Hedgehog and the other was hit by a car.

I was thinking of putting one in the basement and another on the second floor.

I have Simple Solution (is that the enzyme stuff you are referring to) because my little rat terrier has accidents... :banghead:

11. Since you mention that the box was used..

by two previous cats, your cat might be smelling those two other cats, and that may be the reason he refuses to use the box. Cats have a really acute sense of smell, and if there's a smell of another cat or cats,it may deter him from using the box. I would suggest a brand new Jumbo/Large litter box that will have his scent alone. The combination of a new box with Cat Attract litter might just do the trick. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

12. No, Simple Solution is NOT an enzyme cleaner.

You need Nature's Miracle or Petzyme or one of the other specially made cleaners.

Then, you need to make sure that it gets all the way down through the carpet. If you only clean the top layer, the smell underneath will persist. If you can handle it, soak the spot with the enzyme cleaner and then use a steam cleaner to get it all up.

Hmmmm... Did you wash the used boxes out with Simple Solution? Other than that, I can think of nothing more that you can do except beat your head against the wall... You've already thought of that, I see.

15. Have you tried Feliway plug-ins?

The Demon was ticked while I was fostering kittens 2 years ago and took to peeing in the corner of the DR. Feliway stopped it cold. Good luck.

16. Never heard of this stuff...

Mr MB came back from his business trip this morning and his job for tomorrow is to deal with all the cat shit (literally).

The little bugger peed and pooped all over the basement even though his litter box was down there with him. I did not lock him down there, he came and went as he pleased, but thankfully, he only tagged the rug 5 times (that I know off)
