Nutritional yeast for cats.

Does anyone here feed their cats nutritional yeast as a supplement? If so, I was wondering what your vet says about it. My 10 year old male cat loves it, but my husband read something about nutritional yeast causing an increase in uric acid (which might cause kidney problems) in humans. I had been giving him about 1/2 tsp. a day in some warm water and the positive benefits to his coat and energy level are striking. We decided to reduce the amount to 1/8 tsp., but maybe we should stop it entirely. Thoughts?

4. My husband started eating it, too, mixing it with yogurt and fruit.

How do you disguise the nasty flavor? I don't want to ruin my yogurt and fruit so I tried mixing it in water and drinking it. AAARRGGGGHHH! It was like a shot of 6 week old, moldy, turkey gravy. How much do you take over the course of a day?

5. I sprinkle it on everything because it tastes so good.

Get the bright yellow flakes---nutritional yeast. Try it first on popcorn. I don't wreck it with sweet stuff.

3. I give brewers yeast and zinc/garlic tablets to my dog every day...

6. FYI, garlic and onion are toxic to dog and cat red blood cells.

Ingestion will cause oxidative damage to red blood cells, which can be seen in the microscope as Heinz bodies. If severe enough, it can cause Heinz body anemia. I had a feline patient develop Heinz bodies from ingesting tiny amounts of turkey lunch meat every day (gotta watch out for those "natural flavors").

This is why pet food companies that have a clue no longer use them - because of their KNOWN toxicity.
