Warning out on Nutro Dog Food

I just want to be sure everyone knows this. Thousands of people have reported that their dogs have gotten sick after eating Nutro - vomitting, diarrhea, lethargy. FDA is starting an investigation. Nutro denies everything.

I had my dogs (now 6 years old) on Nutro dry for most of their lives. One month ago, Murphy started vomiting and was lethargic for several days (no effect on Cindy - but she outweighs him by 30 lbs).

We changed over to another brand of dry food and there have been no problems.

2. Mine had a bout of diarrhea and vomiting a few weeks ago...

...and I do think the food was to blame. Nutro Max, which I don't usually buy because I don't like the ingredients - but it was on sale, and ... well, my own fault. Everyone is fine now, but they are off the kibble for good now. That was the final wake-up call I needed to go completely to a home-prepared diet. I just don't trust the commercial stuff anymore. Nutro used to be a decent-quality food, but the company changed ownership a couple of years ago, and that's when a lot of these problems started.

3. do your pet a favor

I am still feeding my 3 cats Life's Abundance. I got a 5 month supply the other day (shipped via UPS) for $120.00. This feeds all 3 of them for a very long time and I think the price is very reasonable.

It is high quality food made in California and also Florida and was invented by a veterinarian.

They make both dog and cat foods (dry & canned) as well as various types of supplemental "treats".

Thanks for warning people about Nutro - this is what I used to feed by cats before I switched them to Life's Abundance after the first big scares a couple of years ago.

On edit: I have nothing to do with Life's Abundance other than being a satisfied customer. My vet was impressed with the condition of my 15 year old cat that also eats this same food btw. :)

5. I think Nutro made my dog sick

I did some research and found out that Nutro had twice as much zinc as
is recommended for dogs.

Sure enough check the package against most others.

At first your dog gets a shiny coat, next he/she gets sick.

Too much zinc can trigger pancreatitis.

But it looks like my dog may have cushings.

I'm feeding her Purina One with chicken as number one and also Green Tripe now.

6. My one cat was on Nutro leading up to the pet food recall

When it got recalled, he developed those symptoms. I switched him off, but his stomach never recovered. According to the vet, he has IBS. He can only eat expensive prescription food (which is filled with shit and makes him fat) or slightly less expensive Evo/Innova/Tiki Cat (which has better ingredients and doesn't make him fat). He can digest hunting kills as well, but if he wants mice, he has to work for it. I'm not putting them in his bowl.

I'm convinced the Nutro food triggered the IBS. This cat used to be able to eat ANYTHING, and now all but a few things cause vomiting and diarhea.
