Does a dog's muzzle get irritated from food? |
|
I've been babysitting a border collie for a couple of months. I've noticed that after he eats, his muzzle is reddened. He often wipes it along the rug, and sometimes paws at it and whimpers. Is there anything I should know about dogs and irritated muzzles? I feed him from a metal pie plate.

1. No but he could be alleric to the pie plate |

I had a big plastic bowl for my last dog when he was a puppy. He developed a weird patch of skin under his chin. Took him to the vet and she told me to try using a different bowl... which I did and the patch went back to normal.

2. I do use different plates |
|
So I don't think that's the problem.

3. Only after he eats? That really sounds like an allergic reaction. |
|
If the plate's not the problem, it could be the food. Have you tried another brand? My neighbor's dog was allergic to the food, so she switched to lamb and rice dog food (instead of the usual chicken or beef) and the dog is fine now.

4. be sure to check his teeth and gums |
|
some dogs have dental problems and or gum disease.
It may not be the problem, it could be food allergy as someone else said.
Feed him from paper plates in future.

5. It sounds like a food allergy |

What are you feeding him? Trying something with a "novel" protein like duck or fish.
