One of my cats has been defecating just outside the litterbox.
I think it's Max because I see him having trouble fitting inside the box to do his business. I keep forgetting to buy him a giant sized litterbox because he's a giant cat. He weighs at least 15 pounds and he's only 14 months old. Would that be the solution, getting a bigger box?

1. The size of the box..
could be a problem, but there are other factors to be considered as well. How many cats do you have and how many boxes for those cats? If you have multiple cats, that could be a problem if there are too few boxes for the cats. Also, the litter could be a problem - he might not like it or it may not be clean enough for him (some cats are really finicky with the litter). I would experiment with the bigger box first and if the problem persists, check out the litter and change it if necessary. Good luck.

3. For my huge Boo-Boo I
buy storage containers (low ones) as litter boxes.

6. Three outta my four are well over 10 pounds...
...and the bigger cats really didn't like the hood that comes on the larger cat boxes.

It doesn't give them room to turn around (and around...and around...), or position their furry little (well, maybe not so little) butts just -so- to use their 'spot' in the litter box*.

It's not the most aesthetically pleasing thing in the bathroom, but I just keep it scooped.
I'd rather have cat litter and the occasional clump or doot briefly on view IN THE BOX (and that's the operative phrase) than a nicely-hooded box which they don't like, won't use...
and cat doots deposited all around the box (or house!)

*It's weird...they each do have their preferred area within the box itself and don't encroach upon another's 'territory'.

The two boxes are side-by-side. The smaller one seems to be pretty much reserved for peeing, as I rarely find doots in it.
Wimsey and Finnegan (the younger cats) seem to prefer to bury their leavings pretty thoroughly, so I keep the litter deep enough for them to do this.

7. I had one particularly dumb tomcat
who would sit in the litter box and crap over the edge, onto the floor.

That cat went outside.

Some years later, they invented covered litter boxes.

8. Our cat, Percy, did it for a while out of sheer devilment, though he's really is an
angel.

He's a very long cat alright, but I was convinced that wasn't the problem, because he fared fine before that. I rubbed his nose in it a few times, but it made no difference. But once he proved he wouldn't be intimidated, he stopped - though admittedly I'd been a little remiss in clearing away the old pee-stained newpaper affected! But that's Percy for you. I don't expect that's the trouble with yours, meow.

9. UPDATE: I got the jumbo litterbox for Max
He hasn't had any major "accidents" since. Max had literally gotten too big for his litterbox.
