Canine cataracts - anyone who has dealt with/dealing with this?
Millie the 7 year old miniaure schnauzer can't see *squat* anymore -has cataracts on both eyes. Before the vet announces the price tag, can anyone offer a hint as to what this costs to fix???

2. Had THREE with it - my first - a cockapoo - was blind by the time she passed...
learned to navigate around the house going in one direction only - staying to the right or left at all times, till she found where she wanted to go - even did it out the dog door and around the yard!

It was a thing of beauty to behold - lived to NINETEEN!!!

Our Golden Retriever Sherman now has progressively worsening cataracts in one eye now - but he's still doing fine at TWELVE!!!

I don't know if I'd recommend surgery, tho - dogs can and do learn to adjust...

3. I rescued a dog
that is severly vision impaired. Not from cataracts. THe dog was attacked by another dog before coming to me. The dog has adapted and does very well. He does have problems with depth perception and problems seeing in the dark. I always leave some light on, use the backyard lighting at night and use ramps so he does not ever have to jump up or down. With these accomdations he does just fine.

4. $5000. for both eyes
My mom had her standard poodles eyes fixed when Sasha was nine. Sasha passed away a month ago at the age of 14. To my mom it was worth it. Sasha returned to her bounding self after the surgery, before she was clinging and subdued.
Some dogs adjust better then others.

When we had Sasha's eyes done we had to take her to a clinic 100 miles from home and stay in a hotel over night with her after the surgery so she could be checked in the morning.
Before the surgery she had gone down to the clinic for tests to see if the surgery was worth it as sometimes the eye is too damaged and removing the cataract won't restore the sight.

5. That was total cost - starts with $1500/eye
But we had several 100 mile round trips for pre and post surgery as well as the surgery plus hotel stay. Even the eye drops weren't inexpensive.
