Dover is right. Turmeric contains a phytochemical called curcumin that is an anti-inflammatory and has been (and is being) studied for anti-tumor properties.
Another one is Ginger, which contains the phytochemical gingerol.
A poster from another forum had pointed me to turmeric/curcumin last fall when my dog was very ill. Her dog lived for *years* with tumors held in check by turmeric. The dosage was, as I recall, 500mg twice/day. (mine turned out not to have cancer, btw, and is fine)
You want to get as fresh as possible -- supermarket spices have been sitting around forever and may be irradiated, which could impact the action of molecules (it breaks hydrogen bonds which changes their shape, and in turn may prevent them from interacting chemically as needed).
Here is some info from the Linus Pauling Institute on curcumin. Critical 'graphs are Induction of Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptosis, Inhibition of Tumor Invasion and Angiogenesis, and Cancer

(note, I am not related to this company in any way. this is just the distributor for the curcumin I got for my dog last year.)
