I don't know what else do do...
It looks as though I'm going to have to find a new home for Wimsey.

He and Riktor have had squabbles and fights...and I've been giving them both their Bach flower remedy...it usually makes their worlds a bit easier for them to deal with.

Today however, it all fell apart.
I was doing something in the garage and I hear MAJOR cat fight. Wimsey and Riktor were locked in serious battle...the clinch went on for over 20 seconds (that's really a long time...) and I don't know how long it would have gone on if I hadn't broken it up. They were all ready to resume it, too...but water is a wonderful thing.
I noticed some blood on Wimsey's neck, and his face has some scratches...and then I found blood on my sidewalk.
Riktor was obviously wounded bad enough to be bleeding, and he took off and still hasn't come home.

I don't know what sets Riktor off about Wimsey...everyone else gets along well, just these two.

So, if you're in my area (check profile) and would like a cat...
Wimsey is almost three years old. He's a big, white, handsome boy (13 lbs), neutered, microchipped, beautifully socialized, and really does play well with others. He's an efficient mouser. Although he's white, he hears perfectly well...his eyes are an unusual grey-green shade.
He's very cooperative when it comes to vet visits and taking meds...I give him his annual vaccinations myself and he is wonderfully patient about this.
He'd do best in a home with older adults (he's not used to kids) and no dogs.

I just don't know what else to do...it breaks my heart, but I can't have the boys beating each other up like this! I still don't know how badly Riktor is injured...hope he comes home soon.

1. I'm too far away. And I don't know about another cat. Mine is old
and on his last legs. So someday soon.
But how sad these cats can't live in peace. I guess it's the predator aspect of it, they are both hunters and want to fight to the death.
Or maybe just surrender, and neither will surrender.
I hope you find someone in your area.

3. The problem might be something totally different...
I've seen Wimsey get into three fights in three days. I'm not sure if he picked the one he was in today with a neighbor's cat.
It wasn't quite as intense as the one he had with Riktor (who finally showed up at 9 this morning, rather the worse for wear), but both of them meant business.

There's been an odor...a very strong odor I noticed after the fight with Riktor, and then the wind wafted a hint of it from the site of today's fight two doors down. It's sharp, very similar to the 'scared kitty' smell, a not-quite-ammonia smell.
Wimsey's alway's been my smelly boy...I'm wondering if his behavior is related.
The vet said that sometimes cats' anal glands get plugged, and that'll make them 'owly' (which I took to mean cranky) and stinky...
This isn't his normal behavior...he's usually pretty mellow.

I need a Cat Whisperer...:banghead:

4. Maybe it's time to hustle Wimsey's furry little butt off to the vet.

5. He doesn't know it, but he's headed there today.
Riktor too, if I can manage it.

This should end well...:yoiks:

6. Well...
Wimsey did have plugged anal glands...apparently cats get them too, just not as often as dogs.
This may help explain his weapons-grade farts...:hide:

Both the boys are on Clavamox, Riktor's on house arrest (a rather nasty chin/neck wound)...and I'm giving Wimsey warm compresses on his furry little white butt to try to help with the impaction.

Sainted Vet couldn't get his glands completely cleared out (at least, not without sedating Wimsey...
he did NOT appreciate the procedure :nuke:) but thinks he may have removed the 'plug' and started the process.
Hope so...I want my sweet boy back and an END to these animosities! :banghead:

Anybody have any idea what causes anal glands to clog up in the first place (i.e., is there something I can do to prevent this problem from recurring)?

7. Get his furry tuchas into the vet NOW
A change in behavior plus a funky smell add up to a sick kitty.

Oh, and keep checking both boys for abscesses. Anything that pierces a cat's skin in a fight can provoke an abscess.

BTW, you did get those boys fixed, didn't you? Unfixed toms fight. Period.

I'm kind of obsessive about that!
:freak:

Riktor came to live with us (courtesy of our then-alpha cat Misha...who was also neutered) when he was about 5 months old, near as we could tell. Two days after it was 'official' that he was going to be living here, he was at the vet's, undergoing 'tutoring'.

Wimsey upgraded from where he was living (i.e., I didn't go looking for a cat, he just sorta moved in...best buddy and adopted brudder of one of my other cats) so I don't know how old he was.
He was a pretty good-sized cat, but didn't have his adult fangs yet, so was probably between 6-9 months old...and his furry little white butt was undergoing modifications at the vet within a week as well.

Both the other males- Finnegan and D'Artagnan- became responsible members of the Feline Community (i.e., they are NOT responsible for any litters of kittens that may turn up) before they were 7 months old.

My Sainted Vet informed me that you can push the waiting period to 9 months, but he doesn't recommend it...especially since a queen in heat in the neighborhood will accelerate the maturing process (read: make a man...er...tomcat out of a half-grown kitten). :yoiks:
