AVMA just emailed me about a cat that died in OR this week that tested positive for H1N1. Like the previous case (which recovered), this cat had LOWER RESPIRATORY disease - in lay terms that means coughing and labored breathing (NOT sneezing and nasal congestion). I don't have any additional info, other than that it was in a home with 3 cats, people in the home had been sick with flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, aches and NOT vomiting/diarrhea, which are NOT flu-like), and all 3 cats got sick recently but only the deceased cat has tested positive. Confirmatory testing is still pending.
Cat owners: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE get vaccinated against H1N1 if at all possible. And PLEASE avoid contact with your cats if you get the flu.
