His neighbors thought Farouq Omar Muhei was dead. A suicide bombing had killed at least 127 people and destroyed multiple buildings, including his home in Baghdad. So they were stunned to see him return to the ruins the next day.
Muhei wasn’t there to survey the wreckage. He was there for his dog, Liza, who had also miraculously survived the blast.
She was chained to a roof railing, one of the only parts of the building still standing. Her water dish was beside her, but it was empty. Muhei, his son and his brother climbed through the rubble and brought her down to the street, where she began lapping at a puddle.
Muhei rescued Liza six years ago from a pet market in Baghdad, which was also hit by a suicide bombing in 2008. His home is gone, but Muhei and his family — and Liza — are safe, for now.
