My cat kneads me like nursing which I love but his little claws

keep coming out and I have to stop him because it HURTS. I've clipped them but boy do they grow fast.

I'm thinking I have to train him not to knead me unless someone has another suggestion. Also any ideas about how to train him to stop. He goes outside through the dog door but stays around the house and when he comes in he meows soooo loud and comes right over to me. I luvs him so.

1. Go to a fabric store and get half a yard of fake fur

Any old color will do. When you have him in your lap for a petting session, plop him onto that fake fur and let him knead.

Kneading is normal kitty behavior and quite a compliment, meaning the kitty feels as safe with you as he did with Mom.

Eventually, he might associate it more with the fur than with you, solving the problem. If not, the fur will save your skin.

6. Better than fake fur; micro-fleece (like a super soft baby blanket)

or polar fleece. My cats go kneading crazy as soon as I place them on it. Another option; soft paws claw sheaths, which are sold at any pet store.

Don't attempt to try to teach the cat not to knead. It's a reflexive behavior so trying to stop it will only stress both of you out.

3. My old alpha-cat Misha was like that...

He never did quite figure out the 'retract claw' key function, so I learned to keep either a thick furry blanket or pillow handy for when Misha deigned to give me some lap time.

It's been four years, but I still miss that big, loud, noisy cat...:(

8. I used to use Softpaws on my cats' claws when I slept on an air mattress

I no longer use them for two reasons: 1) my cats have a "scratching post" better known as the unfinished wooden frame surrounding the door to my room (I live in an SRO); and 2) my big baby Max is so smart he learned how to take them off after I put them on him.

I decided it's a waste of my time and money to cap my cats' claws, given that they've outfoxed me once again. Damn cats!!!

5. My old boy does the same thing on my stomach while purring up a storm

It hurt at first but over time I got used to it. I tend to wear thicker clothes which seems to help too. He acts like it means a lot to him so I let him do it. Him and I are bonded pretty well. Best cat I ever had.
