Sit. Stay. Parse. Good Girl!
Chaser, a border collie who lives in Spartanburg, S.C., has the largest vocabulary of any known dog. She knows 1,022 proper nouns, a record that displays unexpected depths of the canine mind and may help explain how children acquire language. . .

A Nova episode on animal intelligence, in which Chaser stars, will be broadcast on Feb. 9.

1. Amazing!!!!
And I KNOW it's some flaw in me that I can't teach my Border Collie Mix to 'DROP IT'! (especially where cat poo is concerned).

7. If that's your dog in your sig line, he sure is a cutie
I love Border Collies. I think my ACD is probably a mix with the ACD dominant.

2. Great story. I have an ACD and I know he is smarter than me
:-). My husband says we aren't smart enough have a Border Collie in the house. I think he's right.

4. Mix is not so bad
My little BC Mix is active, but not obsessively so and is making a pretty good house dog (she's only 26 lbs and we exercise her). She is smart though; and wiley! Probably not nearly as smart as a pure bred working line Border Collie, but she can work my husband out of food in a heartbeat.

8. We've got an ACDx
and she is incredibly adept at understanding human language. I taught her sign when she was barely toddling. She turned 10 on the 12th and she's still learning -- and teaching us!

We've got a BC mix who's as bright and just adopted a rescue BC to start stepping into our ACD's role as a service assistant. (I made another post in this group a few minutes ago.) BC's are high energy but incredibly fast learners.
