Any recommendations for puppy chow?
Currently the puppy is being fed pinnacle turkey by the woman with the litter. We won't be staying with that and there doesn't seem to be any dealers around here anyway. Suggestions?

1. We've done well
with an assortment of Science Diet foods - supplemented with lots of human foods. Fresh fruits and veggies, breads, oatmeal, and rice, and some chicken and beef. And, of course, a wide assortment of dog treats.

2. I just switched...
...from Diamond (a good quality brand that will not break the bank) to Chicken Soup for the Cat-Lover's Soul (a higher quality food- a little more spendy, but I'm trying to avoid any more kidney issues).

Both companies make food for dogs as well...and for the different stages of their lives; not just "Dog Chow".

The "Chicken Soup" was rated very high on a comparison website for catfoods and 'bang for your buck'.
The boys like it :9 and their coats are AMAZING. Everyone has a very soft and silky texture that just cries out for petting (and petting, and petting...) :D

Riktor and D'Artagnan (the short-haired black cats) are show-cat glossy. Wimsey (pure white) has that subtle white-cat shine.
Shimrod is still sporting his dull fuzzy baby coat, but people who've cuddled him (lots!) have remarked upon its texture.

YMMV...

3. Thanks for the input.
I think the pinnacle goes for around $50 for a 27 lb. bag. Maybe I'm being a bit of a tightwad but that seems a bit rich to me. Maybe I'm crazy.

4. I used to use Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy Food
It was good food and my youngest dog did really well with it, but it was too expensive. I have since switched to Nutro-Max Large Breed dog food. It costs about $30 - $36 for a 35 lb bag. I buy two bags a month, and have 3 large dogs that are 70 - 95 lbs each. I sometimes put gravy, or sauce, or plain yogurt and canned pumpkin on their kibble. They go nuts for that. They will eat it plain and dry, but it's not as much fun for them. Good luck with your new puppy! :toast:

5. I use Innova dog food with both our dogs
Our Cavalier Abby, who is a generally picky eater, gets some wet and dry (she gets the small kibble) and our shelter mutt Jack Bauer gets weight management. They both have beautiful coats, and I am feeding approximately 1/2 cup per day for Jack, who is about 18 pounds, and Abby (12 pounds) gets a mix of wet and dry, also about 1/2 cup per day.

You can end up feeding a lot less over the long run with a good quality food.

6. Go to Truthaboutpetfood.com and read up on pet food. It might help
you decide.

7. Glinda is right. Do some research and find out what is best.
Look for the ones that have not had re-calls as those brands often get re-called again.

8. Stay away from Walmart brands. Ol' Roy is a killer. There are a ton of toxins
in the majority of pet foods. That is why it is best to bone up on the issue.
Please take it from the household that had ten pets that all ate poisoned petfoods five years ago. The financial costs are not worth it even though we fed high end foods. Feed a pet a good quality food and you will have most likely less vet bills. And small poops! Stay away from grains if possible. Cut down the amount when pup is an adult. Get a water filter and feed pure water without as many chems as possible in it. All living things are mostly water. Flourides and such cause C.
In the long run, taking care will be cheaper over the years.

12. My dog loves kibbles and bits, and has done well on it.
It took awhile for us to find the right food. She was sensitive to many things.

14. We are going to give taste of the wild salmon......
a shot. We still have a lot of pinnacle left for the puppy but are beginning the process of switching our 5 year old lab to the TOTW.
