Our kitty is sick.
He is coughing. We have never had a kitty cough so much. He isn't using his potty -or very seldom. We took him to the vet yesterday. They gave him a shot of convenia. I don't know what convenia is.

The vet said his eyes are clear, she could hear no congestion. No fever. But he had lost around a pound. We do not have him on a diet. Clean bill of health. He would not cough for the vet at all. Today he is back to coughing -worse than ever.

Any advice? We love our kitty. He is no longer frisky like he was a week ago.

We give him "Revolution" flea medication. It has never bothered him in the past.

1. Convenia is an antibiotic.
If I were you I'd call the vet again. It might take a day or two for the antibiotic to take effect, but you should find out if he needs to be seen again.

I hope your kitty gets better soon.

3. and if they gave her an antibiotic did they take bloods?
Did the blood tests indicate she has an infection? Just things to ask. Are the antibiotics just a shot in the dark or are they actually seeing something that is evidence of an infection?

With pets they sometimes treat for everything before they know what is wrong. If the treatment doesn't work they rule out the diagnosis that fits the drugs.

Let's hope it's the antibiotics that her making her feel low and the cough is something simple.

6. The vet did not give him a blood test this visit.
He had a blood test fairly recently. But that test was not related to this visit. The vet did say that our kitty did not have a temperature or any sign of infection.

He might be feeling a little better this morning. He is still coughing but maybe it is less frequent.

Thank you for your help. I do appreciate it. I'm reading the responses to my wife this morning.

5. It's kind of a wide-spectrum antibiotic...
The Sainted Vet gave it to Esme when she was battling CRF.
Judging by Esme's resultant behavior, it helped a bit...she seemed more herself.

 for you and skritches for your kitty...hope he feels better soon!

It hurts one so when the furkids are sick...they can't tell you what's going on with them.

7. Thank you very much.
It does hurt when our furkids are sick. The kitty's house mate is an 18 year old pomeranian cross. The pom cannot hear at all and can barely see. She isn't as much of a challenge to ambush as she once was.

4. Upper respiratory infections
are common in cats and they usually respond well to antibiotics. It might take a couple of days but if your kitty has a URI the antibiotics are the way to go.

Hope your kitty gets better soon.

8. "they usually respond well to antibiotics"
I'm so glad to hear this.

I think his behavior has improved some this morning. He got into the dog's basket -an act of defiance that he rarely does. Thank you very much. :hi:

12. I hope he is doing better today
Just curious, have you changed the type of kitty litter recently? The reason I ask, is because I changed
brands with mine, and ours started sneezing like crazy. I thought he was sick but clean bill of health at the
vet. I went back to the original brand of litter I was using, and he quit sneezing. So it must have been
something in that litter that our kitty was reacting to.

13. Thank you for your suggestion.
We haven't changed litter brands recently. But, cat litter, like many of today's consumer goods, can suddenly become unhealthy or even lethal in the corporate quest for ever more profit. We must remain vigilant.

Our kitty has definitely improved. He coughs far less frequently now and is back to his 'old tricks'. One of his old tricks is to intentionally aggravate me until I either physically chase after him of scream at him at the top of my lungs. Of course he just loves to be chased. Damn kitty.

I want to thank everyone for their great suggestions. The people on DU are the finest anywhere.
