Camp Border Collie for Kids

You've gotta check this place out! It's so cool and what a great idea. I found out about it from an article in Ladies Home Journal, that someone mailed to me. The story was about an abused kid who went to this camp and befriended Peggy, a 6 month old BC, who had also been abused. I wish I had the article to post but it's not available on line. They have a ton of beautiful dogs, so enjoy perusing the photos.

You can also go camping there with your own dogs. They need funding, so I thought I'd post it here in case you might want to donate to a good canine/kid cause.

They are absolutely gorgeous! And there's nothing like a Border Collie smile to brighten your day. :-) I think I'll always have BC's.

6. True story: My friend offered dog training as an option for kids

for a Special Olympics-type after-school program.

They could choose from traditional sports or they could work with agility dogs, and then show what they learned during an exhibition at the Philadelphia Dog Show.

On the first day, one of the kids who showed up was this ultra-tall black kid. The sponsors told the kid that afternoon that he had gotten on the wrong bus, and that he was supposed to go to basketball (don't know if that was his choice, or the program's choice).

But the kid so enjoyed the dogs that he asked to stick with it rather than go back and shoot hoops for the rest of the week. And damned if he wasn't out there beaming, and running a dog like a professional handler when the Dog Show rolled around.

8. The feeling of pride was palpable

These are kids that no one listens to -- they're not in charge of anything or anyone. They just relished the responsibility that came with working with these dogs - with having the dogs look to them for direction.

When I saw that giant kid loping along with my friend's Golden on the leash, happy and proud as he could be, I got a little choked up. He can shoot hoops any day. How often does he get to show his stuff in front of the whole Philadelphia Kennel Club show?
