Mistreatment of animal
Over the holiday weekend I looked out of the window and saw the dog next door running down the street loose. I was alarmed because the dog is usually inside a fence and this is on a VERY busy street.

I went out and the neighbors on the other side of the house were trying to coax the dog back into the fence. They said the dog was walking down the middle of the street, in traffic (!!!!!). It seems that he had squeezed through the fence because he was afraid of the noisy fireworks going off everywhere.

As we tried for about a half an hour to get him into my yard or his own, I noticed how thin the dog has become. The owner's husband, who used to take care of the big, healthy dog, left her about a year ago. The owner now leaves him out on the hottest of summer days and the coldest of winter days. On Sundays she has the nerve to go to church, all gussied up and wearing these huge hats while the dog's water bowl, left outside, is filled with bugs and dirt.

My sister has called animal control but they couldn't get to him with the locked fence. I'm afraid they will put Koko to sleep.

While we were trying to get the dog into the yard, the owner came home. When we tried to tell her the dog got out she started saying loudly, "somebody let him out," displaying her bonafide idiocy no less.

It's terrible how some people treat animals. This woman is a psycho.

1. That's so horrible
I hope that you are able to help Koko out of that situation. That woman should not be a pet owner.

2. The classic example we encountered...
...was a family in our old apartment complex that adopted a calico cat -- before discovering that the wife was allergic to cats. Their solution was to put the cat outdoors and put food out on the porch, but have no other contact with it until it became semi-feral. And, of course, never bother to have the cat spayed. We wound up fiding homes for twelve of that cat's kittens before finally taking her to a no-kill shelter in Portland, where she found a decent home.

3. Why do some people think that's okay?
If you can't take responsibility for a pet by providing food, shelter, and love, then don't get one.

4. Abra cadabra!!!
That dog needs to disappear. Maybe you know of a good magician? Maybe you know someone that could be a good magician...

5. Take him away and give him to a shelter. Save his life. Don't do
it when she's around. That dog is depending on someone to help him. I've done it before. I wouldn't abandon a child to this and I feel the same for animals. Be a mensch. Save his life. You know and I know he's going to die otherwise.

6. I'll see what we can do about making it disappear.
At the very least, I'll call animal control the next time she leave it and is not home and this time we will "let the dog out." I just hope animal control doesn't put it to sleep. Maybe they will fine her.

I don't know of anyone who would take it as it's an older dog, pretty set in its ways.

7. Please do not call animal control.
If they take the dog and the owner doesn't claim it, it will be put to sleep. It is difficult to adopt out older dogs and they will not even try. Contact a local animal rescue group and then make the dog disappear.

8. I agree. Unless you have a no kill shelter like we do, you are taking
a chance with euthanasia. I will think of you. You are such a good person to help this little guy. He is hoping you will. Keep us up to date, honey. You will be a hero if you do this.

9. Do you have a friend/family member anywhere in your area who would be
willing to put the dog up in their garage if you can help him disappear?

It is hard to help a neglected dog when you live so close to it's owner/abuser. If the dog has a good temperament, is willing to crate, and you offered to take responsibility of feeding/walking/vet and finding a foster home or forever home, maybe someone would be willing to host to help out.

I nearly got to do this last winter for a friend who lives across town - the next door neighbor kept a small dog on such a short chain that it could not get into its doghouse or get to its water bowl. It was an insane situation. She rescued it and before she could bring it to my house she took it for a walk at a local park and ran into someone who had just divorced, but who was still good friends with his ex- who was looking for a new dog and that was that. The dog went from hunkering down in a shallow hole in the backyard without adequate food/water to sleeping in a cozy bed in a house across town in about 8 hours. One more miracle not to be overlooked in a crazy, confusing world.

10. Sorry for the psychobabble - but she may not just be
casually neglecting Koko (as in - she just is not a dog person and is just not paying attention). She may be deliberately neglecting him to get back at the husband who left her. Koko's gotta get out of there.

If you can get him to a family member/friend's house across town you can contact a rescue organization and get him placed from there...

12. Please don't call Animal Control. The dog will most likely
be euthanized. If you can find a no-kill shelter in your area, see if you can place the dog there.

I hate stories like this. I would steal that dog in a second...

Please keep us posted.

13. Good for you! You aren't 'stealing' -
No one can own an animal, just like no one can own the earth. You are 'rehoming' just like all of the other great people who do animal rescue.
