Help! Anyone know of a Labrador Rescue group in NC?
There's a beautiful black lab next door and the neighbors don't really want her anymore because she's not a cute little puppy. She is stuck in a 16'* 16' pen in the back corner of the yard with hardly any shade. I've already had to call the sheriff on him because he didn't have her a doghouse and it was in January! We heard her crying and I just said, "Enough." Now she has a dog house but they just leave her out there alone, day after day.

I'm trying to find a lab rescue group that might could come and ask the neighbor if he'll surrender her. We buy her treats and sneak them over there to her. It's pathetic. We are very frustrated and need some help.

Anyone know of a group that helps rescue black labs or labs in general? I'd really appreciate it. I've googled but only found groups that were out of state.

We bought her another chewy bone and we're going to sneak it over tonight so the owner won't see us. This is breaking my heart!

1. Try petfinder.com
They have a list of rescue organizations by state, so maybe that would help you.

2. I'll try that. I checked tonight - NO FOOD OR WATER
It was almost 100 here today. She's in a pen with her own filth and she's never been brushed.

She scarfed that bone down like it was nothing because she was so hungry!!

I hate folks who get a puppy but don't want a dog.

3. I hope that works for you. I think you ought to call the police
That is no way to treat an animal. They should have the dog put in foster care and be fined a huge amount!

Thank you for helping an animal in need.

6. He's not a responsible pet owner. I'm going to have to call the police
She can't stay out there with no food or water. She just can't. She'll die.

She's never been on a lease. She's never been walked. She's been in that pen for almost all of her life. She's never been brushed. She doesn't have anyone to play with. She stands in her own filth.

I CAN'T TAKE IT!! Why do people get animals if they aren't going to take care of them and love them?

This is heartbreaking and infuriating at the same time.

Thanks for the support. I need it.

5. Thanks. I contacted them and here is what I got back
"Hello,
I will answer your email ASAP.

We can take no dogs in at this time as we have no room. We will list purebred Labs needing homes as a courtesy for you if they meet our listing criteria. Listing info will be in my reply to you.

Please note:
MIXES - We are no longer able to assist with mixes. If you are looking to place a mix go to www.petfinder.com , click on the shelter/rescue link at the top, enter NC when prompted, & when the list comes up look for local groups & contact them for help.

STRAYS - We do not have the ability to take in & hold strays while attempting to find their owner. If you can keep the dog a week do so & place a found ad in the paper (free of charge!) for the area the dog was found. Contact the shelter, humane society, etc. & list the dog as found. Take it by a vet to be scanned for a microchip. If dog is not reclaimed contact us again."

My best friend does rescues and I just don't see how she can handle it. There aren't enough foster homes. Some folks just don't care about their pets. It's awful.

7. Good news! The lab group has one slot
My friend who does Golden Retriever rescues will help me to deal with the owner. If he will surrender the dog, I have to take him to Winston-Salem.

If he doesn't surrender the dog, I was instructed to call the police and then inform the rescue folks and the Animal Control people.

This is going so painfully slow! It's supposed to be 100 degrees today and all she has is a doghouse and no water.

9. Can you take her some food and water?
I'm sure you thought of that but you haven't mentioned giving her anything but a dog bone.

This is such a sad story. Good for you for trying to help the dog out.

10. Oh - sorry to make you wonder on that!
Of course, we are making sure that she has water and food. I just walked over there to check her out.

When I got there, I was amazed. They had cleaned out her pen! I think that they know I'm watching them and they had her pen clean. She had some water in a small bowl but the food bowl was empty.

I have found a slot for her and my friend who does Golden Retriever rescue is going to help me with the owner to see if he'll surrender the dog. If he doesn't, I'm calling Animal Control. I'll then notify Animal Control that the rescue place will take her.

If he surrenders the dog, then my friend and I will drive her up-state to a vet that the shelter uses.

She was outside all day today in 100 degree heat (110+ with the heat index) with NO SHADE WHATSOEVER. When I walked over there tonight, she was trying to lie in the shade of her doghouse.

12. Glad to know they cleaned her pen
but the poor thing in all that heat.

Again- good for you for what you are doing. :toast:

My boyfriend's daughter wants to get a "puppy" and I'm worried the same thing will happen to it when the "puppy" becomes a "dog." I tried to talk her out of it but she says she can take it "to school; other kids do." :eyes:

14. Oh, boy. Folks just love puppies - not so much dogs
She's a big dog and full of energy.

Her pen was full of fecal matter before. Believe me - they know I'm watching.

I saw him hit her in the face yesterday. Oh, yes. I did. I've been watching him and I have seen how he treats her when he does go out there to check on her.

8. Arnheim - Call the ASPCA or Cops immediately!
And call back repeatedly until they get there. Better that she is taken away to a shelter where she will have food and water - the rescue people can pick her up at the shelter.

O8)

11. We are taking care of her and will act SOON
I know that it seems crazy that I'm moving so slowly but I wanted to get her a place to go.

Apparently, the other neighbors who are bordering on this guy's yard are taking her water and food as well as me. We are all worried. I'm was scared that she'd go to the kill shelter.

This is craziness. Tomorrow is D-Day. If he doesn't surrender, Animal Control WILL be called. Enough is enough.

13. Thanks for letting us know that both you and your neighbor
are supplying her with water and food. You are O8)

If you wind up calling Animal Control tomorrow she will still be okay. The rescue group will pick her up at the shelter well before she would be euthanized.

Many shelters make a point of calling rescues whenever they have a purebred animal arrive at the shelter - that way they have space to hold the many, many mixed breeds that the rescues won't take.

Let us know how it all goes - it is a relief to know that she and you will both be feeling better tomorrow night.

15. I want to walk over there and smack him.
He is the most irresponsible pet owner I've seen in a while.

Sure, if you don't want to walk your dog or clean up after them, just stick them in a pen somewhere! No problem! Just throw them away like trash!

Grrrr.....
