my boy, Andrew, is sick

He's been throwing up and having diarhea for the last two days. He's overnighting at the vet with an IV in his little short leg and I could climb the walls. He's eleven and the nicest boy. He's in my sig. The little dog at both ends is Tippy, his brother. He died in March of a blood clot. Nearly. Killed. Me. Now his brother has a bacterial infection and I tell you, I haven't felt this awful in a long, long time. Please send good vibes for my baby. He's a good, good boy. They will call me tomorrow and I hope he's up to coming home.

Eleven years is not that old for a little doggie. And if he comes through this, he should have quite a few more years. I am fostering a sweet little Benji-type dog who is 11 and he is doing quite well. But I want to find him a home because I do not want to be the one to put him down if he does become very ill in years to come.

I just picked Andrew up. He weighed nearly twenty pounds and weighs about 16.5 now. He's so thin it makes me blink. He's starved (he thinks) and wants food but must wait for tomorrow. He had hemoragic gastrointestinal syndrome. His intestives were bleeding from an infection. He almost bit the dust. Don't hesitate when your babies are sick. For guys this small, even an hour matters. He's so tired, he sits on the floor and falls asleep, his head touching the floor when his eyes close. Makes me laugh and remember another dachsie I had years ago, Fritzi. He used to sit and fall asleep sitting up, his head drooping until his nose touched the floor. Then he'd fall over. Andrew is the bigger one in my sig, the one lying with his twin brother, Tippy, who died in March. SNIFFLE! I sure do love my boys.

He's laying here in his basket and the other boys are running around so glad to see him. Thank you all soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. I am so glad this place is here. There is nothing like other people who know what you feel. Lorien, hope your babies come home soon and stay well. Thank you, thank you, thank you, everyone.

18. Thank goodness that he's come home!

did they give him a good prognosis? I certainly hope so. I'm a wreak over my own guys, and Catwoman's Trinity had me in tears yesterday. If you would have lost another sweet daschie I would have simply been beside myself! Andrew gives me hope that miracles can happen. :hug:

and nothing quite as pathetic as a sick one -- they give you the white eye, and look so sad.

Hope Andrew's recovery is coming along well.

Suziq - I was at a party, and a young guy says to me "I grew up around the corner from you. Isn't your mother the one that had a ramp outside the house for her dachshund?" I had completely forgotten! All of our dachshunds had their back legs go out eventually, and all of them recovered, although never 100%, so we built a ramp.

My mother's most recent one isn't allowed up on the bed, and has been discouraged from diving from the 5th stair, so we're hoping his back holds out. It's tough to keep them from jumping, though!

Meet my Molly


Molly is my second doxie who had back problems. My Misty's back went out when she was 5 years old. Surgery was able to fix her problem. It was a slipped disk. Unfortunately, Molly was not so lucky. She developed intravertebral disk disease, also when she was five. Surgery was unable to help her.

As far as keeping doxies from jumping, good luck! We tried with Molly, but she was a jumper. Stairs were also a problem. Oh well . . . We love Molly dearly and are more than willing to give her the extra care she needs.

Look at her eyes! How could you not accommodate her? She looks like she's moving along just fine. Dachsies pretty much just want to hang out with you, and they're happy.

She's so black and shiny - what a nice coat. All of ours have been red or red & black - the latest one, Frankie, was gold as a puppy and a gorgeous light red now.

23. The Pic is A Year Old

Now, Molly is having a major problem with her skin and coat.

She is extremely itchy and is losing her fur. Tests show she is having a problem with her thyroid. The vet thinks this might be the cause of the problems.

Molly just started taking thyroid medicine. In 3 weeks, she will be going for another blood test to see if this is helping her.

My poor baby - how much more can happen to her! Breaks my heart. :cry:

24. Frankie has skin & coat problems too

He looks great on top, but you roll him over, and he has this horrible itchy black (fungus?) all over his belly, especially under his legs. And he's constantly chewing at his paws. We know all about their backs, but have never had to deal with this before. My mother has tried everything -- expensive fish-based dogfood, weekly baths (and you know how they hate water), medicines, ointments, the works. He gets better, but it never clears completely. My parents are in their eighties, and it seems like everytime I call either one of them or the dachshund has just gotten back from the doctor's office.

But thyroid isn't so bad once they have it under control, even though Miss Molly doesn't need any more afflictions. I know lots of humans on thyroid meds!

Molly: She is gorgeous. Does she have dark spots under her arm pits and warm areas? My vet says they have this as a weakness, that they get this rashy stuff and its called elephant skin. I will ask what to do about relieving it. My boys, Tippy and Andrew, have it to varying degrees and when they get sweaty, they itch.

Thyroid can cause the hair loss. My black and tans, Tim and Pippin, both have a bald spot on their tails. We had them tested and they appear okay. Thyroid is a problem in the breed.

I had two lose their leg function: Tippy and Robby. They were severe. I took them to a specialist and they were fenestrated, that is, their bodies were operated on and the calcium between the bones of their backs which caused ruptured or slipped disks was removed. There would be no regrowth of it and they recovered nearly 100% from zero function. I worship the ground Dr. Tualmi hovers over. Get to a vet immediately and see if this is the option and find a vet who can do it. Cage your pup IMMEDIATELY and keep them there until you find out what the prognosis is. Molly is a hero to me, that kind of baby, being happy and living well in this condition. So are the owners who care for them this way, sometimes having to express their bowels.

It's amazing to me that after our first dachshund, we all know what's in store for us -- lots of chewing until age 2, voracious appetites for life, obsession with playing ball, lots of barking, and a good chance of going down with a back injury at some point.

And yet, we still stick with the dear little creatures!

28. I'll send you good vibes. Brought my baby in this am with

vomiting and diarrhea and anorexia too. They say he has pancreatitis. I am worried sick. He is 10 years old and just a sweetie. He never shows he is in pain. I just went to visit because he has to spend the night on IV fluids also, and tomorrow I might have to bring him to another hospital for 24 more hours of fluids. This office isn't open on Sundays so I guess he has to transfer. How stupid that. I am fighting that feeling of I got to go get him. He was so sick I thought I was going to lose him, and now I just want him home.
