Has any one tried a LitterMaid pan?

I am wondering if I should spend the money on a littermaid or another brand automatic litter pan. I have a big 20 pound male and a 7 pound female who currently have their own pans. I would hate to spend $200 only to have one of them reject it. Any opinions?

1. They work quite well...

...as long as you use LitterMaid's own (grain-based) litter. If you can't get it, other brands of grain-based litter may or may not work well. And avoid clay-based litters at all cost...they are practically guaranteed to jam the rake, leaving you with an expensive non-automated litter box until you dump it out and try grain-based.

2. I've had 2 LitterMaids for about 5 years now.

I've never used anything but scoopable litter in them AND I have 2 diabetic cats who pee lakes. A hair pick works well for the few times the rakes have gotten jammed and those have been very few.

I love them as it is difficult for me to maintain catboxes and I had the cats before I got sick.

3. I have found that one of the more common causes for my

patients not using the litter box is use of a self-cleaning litter box. They can scare the living daylights out of them.

Besides, I look at it as sort of an automatic diaper changer - would you use one of them? As the "parent", you really need firsthand awareness of what is coming out of your cats daily. Use of scoopable litter plus paying attention to clump size and quantity is a great way to pick up on early disease cues, before the cat gets SICK.

4. I had one a few years ago and liked it for 2 cats

but with four pooping away now, I think the Littermaid would crash and burn, would have to get 2 of them!

The only thing I did not like back then was the small receptacles for the doodie, the little plastic poop drawers that cost a fortune.
